#28 – “Holdens”

18 11 2009

Not to be confused with the Chav, the bogan’s British cousin, the new bogan male now wants to be a Chev. This utterly confusing phenomenon involves the removal the Holden badging from a Monaro or SS Commodore, replacing them with badges from a bankrupt American company. While the bogan will sometimes profess a desire to visit the vacuous crassness that is Las Vegas, it has generally been unfashionable during the last decade for the aspirational Aussie bogan to be overtly pro-American. Except on his Australian car.

The entire Holden Commodore range is designed in Australia, and built in Australia. The Australian operation designs and builds an engine that is exported to numerous other countries in which its parent company operates. In the same manner, some Holden cars in Australia use a V8 engine originally designed overseas by General Motors, and also used in Hummer, Buick, Chevrolet, Saab, Vauxhaul, Pontiac, Cadillac, and GMC vehicles. The bogan has a fundamental craving to be seen as tough, and somewhere along the line he incorrectly decided that the V8 engine in his car is a Chevrolet. Making the entire vehicle, by rational extension, actually a Chevrolet. The bogan is seemingly ashamed to drive Australian. This logic flaw is not applied to the VL Commodore from the late 80s, which used a Nissan engine. Because Japanese people aren’t tough, and the bogan needs to be tough.

The term “The Stranger” was coined for the process of sitting on one’s hand until it goes numb, and then browsing pornography. The lack of sensation in the hand simulates the experience of receiving manual assistance from someone else. In the same way, the bogan will drink locally brewed, foreign label beer until its brain goes numb. It will then disregard its otherwise rampant Australian nationalism, enthusiastically ripping the Holden badges off its car, and replacing them with a set of Chevy logos. With its car suitably enhanced, the bogan endlessly prowls the roads of nightclub districts, attempting to trick similarly uninformed bogan females into believing that he is an exotic lothario; a rare and irresistible sexual force from across the seas. All too often, the evening ends with the bogan covertly performing The Stranger on itself in a nearby carpark.

Can’t comment on the car thing. But I do know plenty of metrosexuals whov’e been to Vegas.

18 11 2009
bloke

they can only afford these cars because they write them off on their taxation returns. my nephew, is a tax auditor and the amount of ‘cheating’ these losers do is unbelievable. they are no.1 targets for being ‘looked into’ further.

I used to work as an accountant, and the only way someone will “get looked into further” is if their claims are overly excessive and are not related to the industry they work in, in all my time working in an accountnats office we never had any tradies audited.

I agree… I know absolutely zero about cars (here I am losing Bogan rep points!) but I have been to Vegas and if it is appreciated for it’s cheesiness and tackiness does that not override any bogan”-ness”???

Most metrosexuals (faux-hawk, popped collar or Ed Hardy t-shirt, huge arms) are bogans anyway.

Footballers led Bogans into the realm of metrosexuality many years ago like the pied piper with flute in hand, faux-hawk and shiny white football boots, taking them to the promised land where women are easy and bourbon runs free.

18 11 2009
shazza

jimmy I’m talking real metrosexuals not the faux kind.
Uni edicated, politically aware, well travelled and read, fashion conscious (wouldn’t be caught dead in an Ed Hardy shirt) catch public transport as they would rather rent inner city than buy in the burbs. Appreciate minimalism as an art and architectural form. etc and so forth.

You can see through a fake metro at 10 paces. And a faux-hawk would be a dead give away.

Interesting how the “educated” all espouse the same bleeding heart claptrap without experiencing the wider world. The “politcally aware” usually don’t have an individual thought amongst them, just follow what those at uni told you whilst reading about poverty, war and ignoring the cold hard truth about the non-european world. Well travelled? Yes, you’ve been to London working in a pub or the like with the rest of the sheep. Probably a few other tourist-traps in France and Italy. Perhaps a future post for this site, “working in the U.K. ”
The cars you drive are all imported because they use less fuel, make you feel “continental”, warm and fuzzy, never mind all the energy expended in their manufacture and transport to Australia in massive car transporters.

We contemplated a “working in the UK” post, but it’s not specific enough. We’ve been working on an alternative though. Coming soon. TBL

‘Working in a Backpackers in the UK’? Nothing helps bloat the Aussie bogan’s ego more than landing a job in a backpackers, where they can bond with fellow Kiwi’s/Yanks/South Africans by poking fun at the non-English speaking types and their comfortable shoes.

Anyway, you forgot to mention the tendancy of said Aussie muscle barge owners to honk their horn farewell at 2am, like my entire bogan neighbourhood. They do like to let us all know that they’re leaving safely (and normally drunk) on their journey home, by leaning on the horn for several seconds and yelling some indecipherable dribble from the car 50m up the road (about level with your bedroom window). Nothing annoys me more…oh, except maybe their love of fireworks (also shared by legitimate cultures) for festive occasions.

23 11 2010

Don’t forget their love for standing around the said car talking loudly before getting in and honking the horn

Can offer some insight into this one. Although it wasn’t built with one, the traditional bogan would often replace the perfectly good engine in his holden ute with something manufactured by Chevrolet then, so everyone would know what a mechanical genius he was, he’d switch to Chev badging. Guessing the current thing is a hangover from those days…one of the missing links in the evolutionary chain between the old bogans and the new, perhaps?

18 11 2009
Indi

The missing link is that GM used to sell Chevrolet pick-ups in Australia: they were very popular with farmers. They shared a bit of styling and body work with , ahem, ‘Australia’s own car’

19 11 2009
Lee

Those same chev pick-ups were infact bodied by holden, who incidentally have been around building car bodies since the early 1900’s untill they built their own car in 1948.

I drive a german car, sure it’s a little golf and sure the bogans think i am a fag for it..but fuck i am sick of the amount of times i get tailed gate by a holden driving bogan. This happens a lot in the northern suburbs where the fluros and their utes dominate the roads.

I had one in a green ute tailgate me and then proceed to sit in front of me and not allowing me to over take him. He would accelatare each time.

I guess that could fall under “cuntery” which is a behavioral trait of many bogans. The good old fashion “Aussie Cuntery”

18 11 2009
Indi

Or ‘premature acceleration’.

I drive about 100 kms a day, in and out of the Aldonga/Wodbury experience, in a small high-powered German car, and I’m constantly dealing with bogans of both sexes who feel the need to speed and pass aggressively on their 8km drive home. Doing 90km going into the entrance of their own housing estate.

19 11 2009

I too live in the same bogan hotspot and i see many off these car makes rebadged , P plater, southern crosss stickers on the back 8 inch exhaust off the muffler , and as i sit just above the speed limit on cruise control on our internal bypass I always get overtaken by these tools only to wind up at the same red light with them, I stare over too them and mime my mouth you are a bogan and your not cool, the thing that bothers me the most is these types off people are always the first to get married and the worst thing of all is before marrige they have already reproduced.
I have to also work with these types and trying to understand bogan english as they are so simple minded they have replaced every verb and noun with the word fuckin and always start a sentance off with this word, I hate bogans

20 11 2009
Indi

That common local product ‘Dickhead in a Tin’.

But they must feel great about having beaten you to the lights? I cop them screaming off the feeder road, and fangin’ it to the next roundabout, to turn off into Castel Verde Rise or whatever that estate is called. Yes, metro readers, real estate agents get marketers to make up wanky names for provincial housing estates, too.

Metallic magenta, Chevy-badged Monaro at Birallee BP, driven by fluoro-orange mate. The colour combo was enough to set the teeth on edge, like some poisonous butterfly. The only disappointment was the lack of personalised plates. Must be waiting for them.

18 11 2009

Yeah right, it’s about attention span ratherthan lack of grunt. If I wanted to drive to impress bogans, all I’d have to do is get mags on the car, and drive 20 k above the limit. Gee, I wonder why there’s such a high road toll around here?

19 11 2009

I could assume from your use of the word ‘prolly’ that you are very young as this seems to be a trait commonly displayed by todays teenagers, or just not bright enough to be able to spell the word probably correctly, however I don’t like making assumptions, but I will excuse your ignorance all the same. Road deaths generally have nothing to do with the make of car involved, although early model cars not having the safety features of late model cars are definitely more likely to cause death in the event of a high impact collision. Road deaths are mostly caused by inexperienced drivers, usually young men aged between 17 and 26, who get their ambitions mixed up with their capabilities and inevitably run out of talent. Peer pressure and these people feeling that they need to prove something in any way they know how, to a society of narrow minded individuals such as most of you who are commenting on this thread, and are all too quick at stereotyping people for where they live, what they do for a living, the brand of clothes they wear, and the type of car they drive. In 15 years of being a paramedic, i would struggle to remember any occasions I have attended a car accident involving serious injury or death in a performance vehicle. Probably due to the fact that these vehicles are built with higher standards of safety and control in mind. Of course other contributing factors to road deaths are inattention, not driving to the road conditions, hesitant and slow drivers (many of which are too old to still be driving), underlying medical conditions, and fatigue. You should all be ashamed of yourselves for being so narrow minded and ready to categorize people for the kind of car they drive. This is the sort of pressure our young people don’t need. Sure there are many idiots on the roads, but they drive all types of cars, not just v8’s, holdens, fords or other performance vehicles. I personally own a Holden v8 ute, which I bought because it serves the purpose I bought it for. It handles country roads, has a reasonable towing capacity, is a utility, has great safety features as well as luxury features, and has the power there when I need it, say to safely pass cars being driven way too slow. Contrary to popular belief, it is also more economical than my last two cars – a four cylinder pulsar and a turbo diesel 4×4. Yes, when driven properly they can be extremely efficient. I get 700km from a tank of fuel. Because I drive it properly and don’t drive like a hoon and thrash it. I also love motorsports, and work on the medical team for many motorsports events. I wouldn’t call the drivers hogans either. They race on a track, where safety is paramount, and innocent road users don’t get injured or killed. They are extremely fit, athletic people. How often do you hear of professional race car drivers being involved in road accidents, or for that matter, drug charges, assault charges or any other offences. So, maybe it is you people who are so narrow minded or maybe just too neuronally deficient to be able to see the big picture who are the bogans. Now back to the topic of the actual post, that I came across while trying to research the best way to remove the chev badge off the ss ute I just bought so that I can replace it with the Holden badge that it should have, without damaging the paint. Seriously, what a bunch of judgmental wankers you all are.

I used to get the same thing with my French car, a Renault Clio Sport, 172ch… in fact lots of bogans would try and race me at the lights and I’d just take off and leave them in my dust as the lightweightedness of my car combined with its great horsepower totally outdid their lumps of boganic metal. It was a lot of fun.

There is a lot of cuntery on Australian roads, your tailgating experience is the epitome of cuntery. Bogans have no idea how to overtake. You need to bring your car to Germany and drive it on the autobahns… you’d never get that sorta attitude!

And I was blown away last time I was home at the number of bogans driving around in fluros – yellow and orange. It was so offputting, is it really necessary?

19 11 2009
Indi

Mavis, I’ve had precisely the same experience at the lights! Don’t bogues hate it when your car calmy takes off, making no extraneous noise. It usually has them fishtailing at the next roundabout trying to cut you off.

The fluoros are all about OH&S, or thye could just be the tail end of the eighties revival. The funniest instance locally is seeing local Army base fleet of camouflage trucks driven by blokes in fluoro.

I had the same thing before way back in the day when my late father had a 1996 Nissan 200SX.We would see a V6 S Commodore or sometimes a V8 SS usually a VR OR VS series at the lights but not long after either him or later me were driving that We would eat them for dust and make them look like a Toy Piece of Crap.We have never been a Holden Family although I did come close to getting a Barina for my first car back in the day and we were at one stage when out looking for convertibles on the Verge of getting an Astra in 2002 as the MX5 AND MR2 options are not really practical especially if you need a sometimes back seat at the time.

18 11 2009

Apparentely we used to export Holdens (as Chevrolets) in the 70’s. I was driving through South Africa in the late 80s and saw a Chevy badged Monaro. They would have died. Although at that time I was thinking more about wogs dying as they were more into Monaros then. I also saw a 60s Holden station wagon. which was weird as I was in the middle of nowhere and in a foreign country.

We still do, in Dubai, half of their taxi fleets are Statesmans, proudly sporting the Chevy bowtie on the front, (they are officially called Chevrolet Caprices) the rest of the taxi fleet are Camrys (also built by us Australians)

Thank god the Ford I drive is safe.

Which would make Bathurst some kind of Bogan holy land?

18 11 2009

yeah with a yearly pilgramage. And if they can’t make it,- sit down with fellow bogans, slabs of beer and worship it all afternoon on tv. dude- this is old classic bogan here…

18 11 2009
Frazer

Yes, I would take it a step further and say attendance of Bathurst is one of the many pillars of Boganism. Other than the more famous writings from the old scriptures, Holden is god and Brock is his messenger. Bathurst was ordained as the holiest site in Boganism, the centre of Bogan pilgrimage. Boganism underwent a rapid expansion and within a few decades had spread across the entire continent from Frankston to Rockingham. As the empire grew, Bathurst continued to attract many pilgrims. It is a requirement that healthy, sane bogans must travel atleast once to Bathurst where they can worship in unison…or alternatively, grab a tinny and watch it on the box.

19 11 2009
Lee

Dont knock it ’til you’ve tried it fellas, Bathurst is a pretty good place to be that time of year!
BDave we still import holdens to the states badged as Pontiacs, and the picture of the ute that the Author has used is actually a photoshopped picture of a VE ute rebadged as a chev El Camino.
Why people tend to put chev badges on their holdens, I dont know. I dont reckon anyone would do it to a HK, T or G Monaro, after all these had chev engines in them too!
I like the V8 Supercars and follow holden just as I follow my favourite footy team and appreciate all cars.
My favourite though is lost on the new age bogan, the mighty Valiant!

Perhaps another question worth asking is how many bogans were conceived in a Holden? Or in a Holden at Baffurst? Or Rye Caravan Park?
Perhaps the Freudian influence of Boganism and Holden dates to conception.

18 11 2009
Trippytaka - Mara

Did the author actually consider checking some statistics before writing this one? The fact is that the vast majority of Holden sales are for business fleets. That would make a massive portion of the population bogans.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I totally agree that we bogans flock towards powerful cars. And it’s almost inherent in us to want to modify cars. But lumping all Holdens drivers into the one basket is just not right. Either is lumping us bogans into the one “car brand” basket.

We bogans are available in many sub-bogan packages, which support the entire range of Automotive brands. The idea that we don’t like Japanese cars because Japanese people aren’t tough, is completely wrong. Some of the biggest bogans cruising the streets and doing laps of the Cross are driving Nissan GTRs. And is there anything more bogan than a Dastun 120Y with a $10,000 stereo and chrome rims?

One last point… why is Ed Hardy the only bogan clothing brand constantly mentioned? We bogans like to represent our different factions by wearing our favourite cars on clothing! Hence, where trippytaka came from!

18 11 2009
rustybeamish

Did the reader actually consider that the article is mostly about inaccurate rebadging of vehicles? Other examples include the retardedly insecure “Lexus Soarer” issue, and the bogan desire to “up-spec” a Commodore and badge it as an HSV.

However, the most tragically brain damaged rebadging remains the bogan’s need to turn late model Holdens into Chevrolets, so it was the focus of the relatively short article.

18 11 2009
Indi

Is it rebadging or just the car equivalent of dumping remaindered books? All the Monaros made here for GM in the US with the exquisite luck to coincide with the bankruptcy?

18 11 2009
rustybeamish

Holden has recently been selling some cars to the domestic market with a “special edition grille” that was originally intended to be fitted to the American export variant before a major order was scrapped.

What we’re talking about in today’s article is the aftermarket rebadging done by the bogan based on the deluded concept that they’re driving a Chevrolet.

18 11 2009

So should I re-badge the ‘dore as an Opel?

19 01 2010
BigDownUnder

NO because only the european designed holden’s from the early 90’s to the 00’s were opel based. The contract has since run out. Even tho this may be true the cars the were opel based was just the design, the engine was made by GM and the majority of the cars had parts mixed from all 3 companies, OPEL GM and Holden. so really these cars were a mix of all countries.

19 11 2009

Indi, it’s the other way around. If you are a pom you re badge your opel back into a holden!

Funniest thing I have seen with the Calibra when that was around is people putting Opel Badges on the things.I am not sure how they got them or who gave them the address of the company in either Singapore or Germany to source them from.

18 11 2009
Trippytaka - Mara

Got it. I guess it’s the brain damage caused from excessive tyre smoke inhalation, while egging on Carlee and Robbo when they’re doing burnouts in my driveway. Who would have thought it was so damn toxic? It’s such a shame because the stuff just smells so good!

It’s just… well, with all that defective grey matter, I often find it hard to read past headlines. If you could re-badge the article, maybe something like “Rebadging Holdens as Chevs”, it might help bogans like me a bit. 😛

Just back to the Lexus Soarer… I’m pretty sure that one was invented by car dealers, in order to fleece the wannabe upper classes of a bit more cash. Unaware that they were buying a cheap grey import, they ignored the puzzling sounds coming from the blow-off valve.

18 11 2009
Partial Bogan

Just a few things i noticed, most of the article i agree with except, the engines in late model commonwhore v8’s are actually Chev engines. The Ls1 from the vt to some vz models is a 5.7L 350 chev fitted to late 80’s corvettes, with the newer 6.0L Ls3 from the early 00/01 corvette. The most recent 6.2L is also from a newer version of the vette. All are Chev engines hence the Chev badging. I think the concept is to try and be different, but, like everything they/we do fails miserably due to all bogans being sheep and copying each other.

As for the Lexus/ Toyota Soarer debate they are different cars with the Lexus version being more up market and mostly V8. Same with all Lexus variants of Toyota. Similar to the HSV/ Holden vehicle range.

30 12 2009
Fitzy

Actually its a Lexus if it was sold in America, the Lexus SC300 is basicly identical to the stock standard Toyota Soarer Turbo. The SC400 is the V8 version.

8 01 2010
Deboganator

Er, not quite. The SC400 was equivalent to the lowest-end V8 Soarer (there were three V8 Soarer models). The SC300 was equivalent to the normally aspirated 3.0L Soarer (hard to find).

The turbo Soarer was never sold as a Lexus.

9 09 2010
deadmauS

100% accurate on all fronts

The engines ARE chev or chev based. And the need to rebadge is a need to make ones commodore different to the next. Commonly referred to as the conformadore because there are so many, the bogan is trying to make his special with said badge.

…no brainer

It may be a petty point, but I think the constant comparison of the New Bogan to the chavs (or neds, radgies etc) of the UK, is well wide of the mark.

The cashed-up, gym-going bogan and his/her $30k+ car cannot possibly compare to the street-dwelling, tab (cigarette) cadging weasels that inhabit places like Essex, Newcastle and Cardiff.

Honestly, if you’ve had to deal with these skinny, rat-faced little turds, you would understand the difference. The only things in common is that they both enjoy Stella, though one pays 65p per can, the other, $4.00….

The ultimate in boganity is to then drive this car around a corner featuring a pedestrian crossing, with one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding an iPhone to your right ear, elbow resting casually out of the open window, trucker capped head thrown back in laughter at the wit of the unseen interlocutor.

With it all said and done, the fact that you are all getting worked up over a little badge, that actually represents the true engine within the vehicle, is quite sad.
What should be discussed, is the ignorant upstarts in their Range Rovers dropping kids off to school oblivious to other road users and pedestrians.
There is absolutely no need to own a vehicle that will never see a dusty road, let alone an actual four wheel drive track.

Ahhhh the great Ford vs Holden debate about which one is “more Aussie”. Last time i checked Ford was US owned and headquartered in Detroit and Holden was similarly owned by US giant GM. In fact, Holden has been owned by Americans for far longer than it was ever in Australian control. The fact these crappy cars are made in Australia means nothing. You don’t exactly see Toyota drivers marching around telling people they drive an “Aussie” car because it rolls off the production line at Altona.

To GM’s credit, i love it how they keep stringing along their bogan workforce out here and blindly fleecing money from the SA and Federal governments, when anyone with half a brain can see they will be making their cars in Asia at half the price at some point in the next 10 years.

There should be an addendum to this post, and that is the bogans obsession with pasting the amount of kilowatts on their car..

HSV’s always have “317” or some numbered badge that seems like some desperate attempt to say “mines bigger than yours”..

to be honest i can’t think of any non aussie manufacturer that does this so blatantly?

13 12 2009
Lee

It’s not the bogans who “paste” the amount of kilowatts on their cars it’s the manufacturer, in this case it’s only holden that do it and it’s only the top of the line GTS that has it.
And its not only bogans who drive holdens.

Yes! This is something the bogans need to be informed about – the number of cars that have had the badging for Daewoo (a brand not renowned for quality and only regarded highly in its domestic market) with badging for Chevrolet (a brand not renowned for quality and only regarded highly in its domestic market).

Bogans do seem to have a love/hate relationship with Daewoo – femme-bogues will buy them and plaster them with stick-on frangipanis, Roxy logos and “I’m not a bitch, I’m THE bitch and it’s Miss Bitch to you’ stickers. Male bogans, on the other hand, will simply not regard them as ‘real’ cars.

‘KL’
The reason you don’t see Toyota drivers marching around saying they drive an ‘Aussie’ car is because whilst being manufactured here; it’s basically a global design to which minor changes are made for the Australian market. In the case of the ‘crappy’ Ford Falcon, Ford Territory and to a lesser extent the Holden Commodore; these cars are designed and more importantly ‘Engineered’ for Australian conditions, and it makes a difference.

Take an Australian made Toyota Camry/Aurion out and onto rural roads (particularly unsealed/gravel) and the Front-Wheel-Drive Toyota’s struggle badly whilst the RWD Australian engineered cars chew up these roads with ease. The extra commitment and investment required to employ the thousands of designers, engineers and development teams that add a distinct australian flavour to these cars is what has earnt the Ford motor company and General Motors the right to call them Australian.

The Australian automotive industry employs (both directly and indirectly) over 100,000 people in this country, Australia’s biggest export market (in dollar volume) is cars.

Without these American manufacturers investing in Australian production of our ‘own’ cars (particularly in the case of the Ford Falcon; which is produced on it’s own chassis platform ONLY for Australia; very rare in the global vehicle market) thousands of local jobs would be lost and we would be left with sloppy FWD American/Euro/Japanese imports which are not ideal for this country.

There is no other place in the world where you can get so much car for the money; australian cars are fantastic and in many cases much better than vehicles double or triple the price; it’s a shame that badge-snobs are oblivious to this and continue to buy foreign cars on the unfounded basis that they are in any way superior.

Go ahead and mock the fools with the black VZ-SS with the chev badging, southern-cross or ‘Unit’ sticker and the aftermarket 19’s that look utterly shit; but don’t drag all Australian cars into it, because when it comes to large cars; we do it better.

Think twice before simply dismissing our automotive industry; for these great large-cars (to quote a horrible line of Holden marketing bullshit) ‘mean a lot to Australia’.

9 12 2009
ryu

if they are so great, why did they need millions of our tax dollars to bail them out?

22 12 2009
R.Burgundy

Bail who out?

Toyota, Ford and Holden recieved 35-50 million (perhaps more) each through the government’s Green Car Innovation Fund; but that was for development and construction of vehicles and technologies that reduce overall fuel consumption and co2 emissions. The government money was only invested on the basis that for every dollar the government chipped in, the manufacturers would contribute 4 or 5 dollars for example; and thus ensured continued investment in Australian Automotive Engineering and Manufacturing.

The money invested in the local manufacturers as part of the Green Car Innovation fund will likely be returned to the government many times over through tax reciepts from the manufacturers themselves as well as employees, sub-contractors and parts-suppliers as part of the increased economic activity from local manufacture of these vehicles.

Thanks for bringing it up; great to get another myth out of the way.

28 12 2009
Ryu

Myth?

Holden received 200 million from the Federal Government, that’s in addition to the funding [a LOT more that 50 million] it received to build a “Green Car”.

Fact.

13 01 2010
troy

um….. by green did they mean the new green paint on the SIDI commonbores??

all they seemed to do was develop a colour!!!!!!!!!!!!!

21 01 2010
R.Burgundy

Agreed on the Holden prop-up last year by the Federal Government, that was bullshit and swept under the rug. Had it been any other manufacturer it would have made headlines and we would still be hearing about it.

But to say why did ‘they’ need millions of dollars to ‘bail them out’ implies that Toyota Australia and Ford Australia needed to be ‘bailed out’; they didn’t and haven’t and probably wont ever need to be.

Of coarse they will take the government grants, but why wouldn’t they?

You’d be better off directing your frustration at the Government handing out your money.

holden is not designed or engineered in Australia, it is designed else where , then brought here, advertised as our product. In fact all we have on that car is a badge and nothing but team work with overseas designers, but is it 100% our work? , no it is not.

21 01 2010
R.Burgundy

Mostly right but the recent VE commodores were actually designed and engineered here in Australia, and the V6 engine is a global design that is built right here in Australia. Basically every other Holden is a Daewoo, spare a few.

20 03 2010
Carlos the Jackal

And there are a lot of Holden engineers at Daewoo now. GM seem to regard the abilities of their Australian division more seriously than Ford do with theirs these days, given the rumours of the next Falcon being a Ford Taurus from the USA seem to be persisting.

19 01 2010
BigDownUnder

Somehow bogans believe driving a ford falcon makes them australian and putting that annoying Southern cross on the back window is sposed to make me think wow look how australian that guy is. Yes the falcon has been made in australia for some years now but because holden are outselling them 6 to 1 they have had to make some serious cuts to the ford line and that means axing the only australian car they have ever made, while holden is saying “ha fuck you ford, lets make more aussie cars!” eg. statesman commodore cruze. if every australian was to own a holden i bet that holden could support themselves and remove them selves from GM. The only reason they stay tougher is because its smart to have someone to fall back on in rough times even if that someone is much weaker than you. cough cough GM.

21 01 2010
R.Burgundy

Falcon sedan outsold commodore in two of the last three months of 2009. Ford Australia actually recently invested 230 million dollars in the ‘Ford Line’ and they make 2 Australian cars (Falcon and Territory) not one. The Holden Cruze is a Korean car at present. Holden actually technically ran out of money in 2009, the commonwealth government propped them up with a 200 million dollar loan; this was largely swept under the rug by the ‘GM ROCKS’ crowd and the media; so you can make your own judgements on how ‘tough’ they really are.

Oh…and what a stupid post you’re as dumb as dogshit hey.

You people just dont get it, or simply dont want to.
Chevrolet and Holden are the same company, A lot of Holdens classic cars used Chevrolet engines.
Aussies have been putting Chevrolet badges on classic Holdens since the 70’s.
When they would upgrade the engine to a Chevrolet one.
That was before Aussies became up themselves and you were proud to be a Holden Ford or Chrysler person, or maybe A Euro car person.
You see bogans driving more old imported japanese cars these days.
Clapped out Sylvias and Skylines, Wankrx’s the occasional riced up Supra.
with broken tail lights, Milo tin exhaust and greddy stickers.
Being psuedo stylish is more important than having a car industry is it?
Aus doesnt make anything anymore, needs the car industry, also handy in times of war, the manufacturing capacity.

That’s a good rant, but it doesn’t really address the points we made in the entry, so it doesn’t count as a rebuttal. TBL

Merkins87

I’m sorry ladies & gents, I must disagree with this article (to an extent). It’s actually quite relieving to see for the first time in a long time that people are finally realising that Holdens are simply re-badged Chevvies, I see it as a display of honesty & lucidity, in an attempt to make up for all the years of delusions & jingle bells in the back of a rusty holden ute being typically “Australian”. What I do concur with is the delayed acceptation of the Chevvy badge, as the VE Commo is the first to be designed & produced in Australia, where as in the past ALL Commodores came from older/de-tuned Buicks/Chevrolets (I’ve always considered Ford to be more Australian than Holden for this very reason, as they have been producing & designing falcons here since the XY of 71).

The Holden vs Ford rivalry’s pathetic, I may drive a Falcon & wish to have an Xr5 turbo as my next car, but they’re as good as each other & as American/British as each other, the only Australian car company left is Bufori & even they produce in Malaysia.

Putting a Chevrolet badge on a holden is one of the strangest things I’ve seen. A few older blokes I know commented to me recently that they saw a ute driving around that looked like a holden but must have been a chev ute imported from the states. Once I explained that some twat had re-badged there car I was met with a dumb founded look and the question, Why? I drive a vy ute and can’t understand this new phenomenon and the people who do it. One day the holden badge will be the hottest thing around, it will stand for australian industry and history, just wait…
