Bogan Baby Names (UPDATED!)

List updated 5/1/11!

It’s been decided that the sheer volume of offensively named offspring necessitates its own dedicated page. So here it is. Please submit your suggestions! The original blog entry about the bogan’s love of ridiculous child names can be found here.

Caution: The next person to recount “Le-a” or “Abcde” as a bogan baby name will be shot.

I heard a man calling his son the other day, “Exavier, Exavier! Come here, Exavier!” I was very tempted to inform him that the correct pronunciation of his son’s name was “Zavier”, but I restrained.

I was here

People have started spelling the name Xzaviar, as they like the X sound of it. I personally use X-av-i-er when saying the name for my child, as that’s how I wanted it pronounced. I also know plenty of people who leave the X silent.

A neighbour called their daughter “Siobhan”. Nothing wrong with that as such. Problem is, the parents can’t pronounce it correctly and call her “Shobin”…

I’d like to think most of the sneering posts here are ‘kidding’.
But they aren’t. Where do you think names come from: Officially Approved Dictionaries of Names? Or the shelves of Upmarket Department Stores?
Language is largely made by ordinary folk (just think how African-American jazz/blues/rap was looked down upon, then a generation later infused middle-class culture).

I’m not saying the whackier names here will all survive. But some will, and the language will be richer… My name is ‘Graeme’. Did the language police decree in Elizabethan times that it had to be ‘Graham’ or ‘Grahame’? My daughter is ‘Madeleine’. Should she be ‘Magdalene’?

Graeme,
I don’t know about the rest of the posters here, but some names parents give to their kids nowadays would disqualify them from getting a job outside Coles or Woolies. (casual)

Reply

Olddavey, I think your parents should have been disqualified from having kids. being intolerant to the point of discrimianting people from their name is seriously stupid. you need to remenber that a large portion of Australians were not born in Australia and have different background and may name their kids after names from their country.
People short minded will make fun of others rather than trying to know people…

Sure, you do have a point, I noticed that some names on the above list have clearly been stolen by bogans from other cultures. This site is a bit of fun, don’t take it too seriously. Bogans do have a habit of creating new strange names that often look misspelled, or seem to be named after something they value. Some of these names may endure over time and be used by others, but a majority of them simply will not last because they are just too cheesy for words. With some names, you can clearly tell what the parents were thinking when they named their child, and it would be safe to assume that there are no cultural origins for names such as Princ’ess, Holden, Jack Daniel, Rocket, Stealth Wolfe, Ricca-Donna, Tiffany Diamond… and the list goes on. In all honesty, would you give your child one of those names?

I agree. There are many old/traditional names from other cultures listed here. And since when is Boadicea a bogan name? It’s a Latinized version of Boudica – the ancient warrior queen of a British tribe who battled the Roman Empire. There’s even a famous statue of her in London!

Very sad to see ‘Royal’ on this list of bogan names. It is an old gaelic/scottish name meaning ‘red’ and was the name of my much loved grandfather who was born in 1912. This name definitely does not belong on this list and should be taken off 😦

I bet there is someone that has named their children King, Queen, Empress, Emperor, Prince, I have met a Princess, Duke, Duchess, Earl, Countess or Contessa. One should stay away from titles. who knows in years to come parents don’t often think of the consequences.I do not think much of it now but our family car and my mother shares it’s name with one time neighbours actress alin sumarwata and both are definetly not bogan sounding names.

Boys in my daughters playgroup – Ryott and Onyx. I’m Irish, and love listening to other nationalities struggle with our traditional names. My cousin in Sinead (shin-aid), and some American relatives were calling her Sin-e-add, as they had only seen it written down. My husband is an Australian (with Irish parents) called Sean (Shaun). His sister is Una (oo-nah). They were called See-Ann and (to this day) You-nah growing up.

I don’t get why some of these names are bogan, just because they are not John, Mary or James. My sons name is Saxon, and in no way is that bogan, not quite sure why it there but anyways whatever.

Yes im well aware who the saxons are and that the anglo-saxons comprised on that german tribe and british descendents. The name Saxon also means swordman.

I went to school with a ‘Sunny Sky Golden Morgan-Black’. He liked to be called ‘Joe’.
‘Bilyndah Jaiydhe’ is another personal favourite I have encountered.
I also knew an ‘Oshun’, although her parents were admittedly more hippy/feral than bogan. I think they were into naychah.

I think you need to check whether something is actually a “normal” (ie traditional) name from another culture, before writing it off as “bogan”. Raphaelle is just the normal French feminine version of Raphael, and Milan is a very common name in Slavic countries. Sure, you could mock bogans for pinching “exotic” names from other countries, but you can’t always tell what someone’s cultural background is.

I’m not going to defend Dijon and Chardonnay, however…

And I would just like to point out, much to my chagrin and disappointment, that however the parent intends the child’s name to be pronounced is correct. My name is Arielle. Airy-L not REL or Airy-ul. On the other hand my daughter’s name is Cecily, like sess-il-E. Yet people still pronounce it Siss-il-E or seess-eel-E. Ugh. If I was aiming for those I would have done sicily, cicely, or cecely.

A lot of people are going for khaleesi. Someday I will cry when I meet the first person that named their daughter renesmee. I dislike the whole Kayden, Jayden, Hayden fiasco going on. Who really wants their kids to be one of a million Emmas or Abigails, I personally am okay with uncommon names, but don’t just take a perfectly good name and tinker with the spelling until you end up with alixzandre.

I have some rellies (that I don’t actually know) who named their daughter after the ship that a common ancestor travelled on; problem is that I’m convinced they misread the name “Galacia” as “Salacia” and named the girl beginning with the S. I don’t think that’s a very nice thing to call your daughter!

Love this bogan bugger up, “Xzavier”!
When I questioned the spelling, the mother told me, “I wanted to put the “X” in Xavier”.
I pointed out to her that the “X” is pronounced as a “Z” in Xavier. She hesitated, then asked, pronouncing the “X”, as an “X”, “What about Saint Xavier?”. I replied that the “X” in Xavier has never been pronounced as an “X”. With a horrified, and sheepish look on her face, she simply said, “Oh”, and had nothing more to say. Clearly, it pays to check pronunciation before trying to “jazz up” traditional names, lest people realise you’re a bogan by your name, before they’ve even met you.

My sister is a nurse in Brisbane – and they keep a little diary at the nurses’ station and enter the most “unusual” names that have been handed out to poor innocent souls.
She reckons the best one yet is “Car-ian”.

Now… that didn’t seem that bad – then she told me that the parents pronounced the little girls name “Cardashian”.

Some of the names aren’t bad, just badly spelled or poor choice for your kid. Calcypher was from Howl’s Moving Castle which is a sign that some bogans do appreciate more than ciggy butts and broken Corona bottles. Boadicea is a cool name though and I 100% support that as a name because she was a bad motherfucker who gave the Romans hell up until they captured her.
