Bogan Baby Names (UPDATED!)

List updated 5/1/11!

It’s been decided that the sheer volume of offensively named offspring necessitates its own dedicated page. So here it is. Please submit your suggestions! The original blog entry about the bogan’s love of ridiculous child names can be found here.

Caution: The next person to recount “Le-a” or “Abcde” as a bogan baby name will be shot.

From my son’s kindy (on the gold coast, bogan heartland):

Khyber
Destinee
T’Lea
Matylda
Brie

I can confirm (after subtle enquiry) that Khyber’s parents are not aware of either the Khyber Pass or the rhyming slang meaning – they just saw the name on list of place names and liked it. Other bogan kidlet names I have encountered:

Stoli
BeeJay
Stalin (little girl, her mum thought it sounded nice, like chanel)

“like chanel”
There was a kid in an article about this phenomenon called “Sheynelle”. I was laughing about how bad it was and someone said its a mispell of “Chanel”.
In the article, the mother said she (sic) “wanted her daughter to be an individual”

Years ago I was speaking to a secretary at an office I worked at. Baby names came up in conversation and she told me a couple of the doozies she was planning. I can’t remember the particular names but they were all misspelt. I asked why on earth she was going to give her children misspelt names and she said it was so they would stand out. As if this typo in their name would be only thing memorable about them. Very sad indeed.

A couple of years ago we had a family reunion with lots of historical information. There’s a picture an ancestor drew of “his” ship (ie the one he served on in the Navy?) with the title that looks like it says “Salacia”. Fine, until someone in the family named their new daughter “Salacia.”

Especially since I’ve since seen other handwriting by the same ancestor and other people in the era, and I’m pretty sure that the ship’s name was actually “Galacia” (which may be an area of Poland? does anyone here know?) …

Salacia is a horrible name for a girl because it refers to “salacious” – not a nice thing to call someone!

Salacia is a great name for an adult entertainer. It’s not a good name for a young girl.

Reply

omg – wikipedia tells me that Salacia may refer to:

Neptune’s wife in Roman mythology (see Salacia (mythology))

Maybe that WAS the name of the ship after all?

Galicia is a part of Spain. Galatia is part of Turkey. Galacia, I’ve never heard of. Maybe Google Maps can help.

Reply

Galicia in Spain was actually named after the Galicia region in what is now Poland.
Even if Salacia is a reference to Neptune’s wife, it is still an unconscionably bogan thing to call a child.

I am HORRIFIED! My nice, fairly uncommon name has become a bogan staple (although it is rarely spelt correctly!) How about these for boganesque;
Yasinta (There is a rudiculous woman in the town near where I live (Horsham btw), who writes a truly inane weekly column in the local rag about the trials and tribulations of being a stay at home mum. Each of her four children has a completely BOGAN made up name, this is the only one I can remember, but rest assured, they are so completely BOGAN and hideous I am compelled to read her claptrap drivel. Yesterday, she banged on about having to take a clean set of knickers up to her “Miss Grade 2” at school as she had come a gutser in a mud puddle whilst chasing the boys. Yes folks, it is all going on out here in the boonies.) I will keep you posted on the names as they develop. I think we have a bogan name generator at the hospital here or something. There was a child named Calais around these parts last year, Mum loved Holdens don’t you know!!
Demi
Jai
Ky
Tiarna
Hudson Rex (Puhlease!?)
Allesia
Kelsey
Cailey
Seanna
Lexi
Wylie
Ava
Mya
I’m gonna make some up now!!
Rheanda
Zamelia
Waydon
Jerelle
Natisha Lee

That is enough.

Bogans are multiplying at previously inconceivable rates, it’s like whole orders of magnitude greater than we could possibly have imagined. It makes sense that they need to create new names for their offspring. Bring on the bogan viruses I say!!

My wife and I have a ‘name our unborn daughter’ competition going with family and close friends. Inspite of the ‘no bogan names or bogan spelling’ rules, Taylah and Rebekkah have been offered up.

The latest suggestion, from the sister of a friend, was ‘Candida’. I asked her if she thought that Cameron was a good middle name to go with Candida and whether we should ask the baby to smile…

Reply

Canida, I think a Greek name, is also the fungus which causes thrush.

i know it has been suggested as a bogan name, but rebekkah is the earlier biblical spelling of the name – rebecca is the anglicised variant.

Last week on “Domestic Blitz” (i’m surprise there hasn’t been a article about that yet), there was a teenager called “Shanice” and one sister’s name – also starting with “S” if I correctly recall – was something similarly made up & misspelt in bogan-ese. Can anyone refresh my memory ? (One such name was probably all my brain could take).

Chantelle, its misspelt version Shantelle and, speaking of “Domestic bliss”, CHONTelle should be on that list !

Yes, Mignon is French for cute and a perfectly fine name IMO. Also Miette.

Actually, a lot of the names in this thread are perfectly normal names in other countries/cultures. Bogans might have latched onto them here but that doesn’t make the names automatically awful.

But how do you one up your bogan chums when all their offspring already have mispelt stripper names? You tack an additional name on and hyponate it!

Not sure if its the case here (not sure if they are middle names or superfluous first names), but this is a bogan on facebook’s list;

If I was to reproduce I think I’d name it “dokta dray” regardess of gender.

I’m sorry…I phrased that badly. In this case, among those siblings there were names that could be bogan – (Saskia and Esemerelda) but that Atticus and Mungo that weren’t…hence my confusion.

I have to admit…I love unusual but not scary names myself, so Atticus made my shortlist, though it wouldn’t really have worked for my daughter, hence the not using it. It’s still shortlisted for any brother she might have though.

Saskia is a normal Dutch name.
Rembrant’s wife (and model) back in the 1600’s had that name.

I’ve always liked it. Its very rare here. Have the bogans taken it as their own ? Hope not !

Since when is it appropriate for people to bestow upon their offspring the names of cities they’ve never visited, countries they couldn’t find on a map, or geographic regions (Savannah, Oshean’a, etc) which they couldn’t define with a gun to their head?

Reply

This place name stuff is not new nor necessarily bogan.
I think making it a blanket ruling is too much.
To me it depends on the choice of place name and, as you say the pretensiousness of the parents – the ir choice being incompaticble with THEM.
Jamaica as a girl’s name is nothing new. Jackson Brown wrote a song called “Jamaica say you will” in the early-mid 70’s, long before all this started. Joe Cocker recorded it in 1975. The character in the song was daughter of a sea captain, so I guess he supposedly had some valid reasons for the choice ?

“Gone with the Wind” had a character called India Wilkes. During the American civil war. Upper class.
Florence Nightingale was named for the city in which she was born, as was her sister Parthenope – and their parents were , again, upper social class.
But I think the Beckhams have something to answer for in this trend with their son Brooklyn (site of conception, allegedly)

Yeah – I think she said similar … it resonates a bit. The other day, I kid you not, I saw in the birth announcements for twins Shantaeya Sindi and Tylarr Ondray Smith, the children of Muriel and Daniel.
It was like a boganfest of fail.

“Tylarr Ondray” – it just occurred to me – could this sort of utter nonsense actually be NOT be an attempt to be “individual” and “unique” at all, but arise purely from the parents’ inability to spell it correctly ?

Yes. I know a bogan who bestowed his mini-bogue with “Shy-ann”, not realising that neither the Native American tribe nor the Wyoming city he is pretty unlikely to visit are in actual fact spelled, “Cheyenne”.

Other bogues I know, inadvertently going the phonetic route, have abused Christopher (Kristapha), Asia (Aiysiah, shit you not), and of course, the obligatory Michaela (Mikaylah). Amongst myriad others, but it’s too depressing to go on. Suffice it to say, most of the girls’ names end in, “ah”, and most of the boys, “ayden”

“Suffice it to say, most of the girls’ names end in, “ah”, and most of the boys, “ayden””

That is a very neat summary and, in fact, a valuable screening tool !

Maybe TBL could make a name creator like their wedding vow generator ? Or at least a set of formulas ?

I completely blame Queen Brittny (or however its spelttainly not normally or correctly) Spears, of the Bogans for all the “Jaydens”.

I’ve been meaning to contribute for a while now, and I’ve decided to do it scientifically …
First I found my daughter’s school magazine, looked through the photos and started writing down bogan names. I had planned to do all years, but by the time I’d got through K-2 I had had enough.
Then I Googled “name meanings”, and used the first two sites to eliminate the real names which I’d not heard of.
Then I removed the names that had already been mentioned on this page.
The list …
Bluede
Calaeb
Caprhyse
Daffa
Destiny-Rose
Enessa
Graydon
Haegan
Jekope
Keian
Keilee
KeiraLee
Kiarna
Kyya
Lily-Rose
Micaylah
Shakara
Shantii
Tahleia
Zamba

Now, I am sensitive to the fact that some non-Anglo names look strange to Anglo eyes. I have removed a couple of names because I know that the child is not from an Anglo background. The remainder – well let’s just say that they have Anglo surnames and look Anglo – plus we all live in a country town.

I think the only solution is to empower the Office of Birth, Deaths and Marriages to correct spelling before issuing Birth Certificates.

Ha, thanks Grant (and other recent contributors). We’re writing blog posts flat out at the moment, so we haven’t had a chance to update our big list of bogan names in a while. When we do, though, all of the new additions will get on there! TBL

“the only solution is to empower the Office of Birth, Deaths and Marriages to correct spelling before issuing Birth Certificates.”

Wouldn’t that be fantastic ?
A bit like Ellis Island in NYC “anglicising” non- English-siunding surnames as imkigrants were processed there – without asking.

Not very much like Ellis Island. At Ellis Island they were adults with established identities and personalities. Here we are talking about newborns with stupid parents.

Its exactly the same as Ellis Island in that the authorities made value judgements re what people should be called and changed names officially with no consultation with the person.
In the case of the types of names listed here – I’m all for it.

I once taught a boy whose name, he insisted, was spelled “MIcheal.” Poor boy, probably a mistake by bogan parents, but he’s going to have spent his life spelling out his name for officialdom. (Come to think of that, that was more than 25 year ago… wonder if he reads columns like this now?)

“Graydon”. I can’t can’t believe it. We are plumbing new depths.
Names that end in “den / dan / don” are definitively bogan.

Names that end in “elle” are not far behind.
Narelle, Shanelle and Sharelle have to be some of the worst. But they were more 70’s.

It’s like they’ll try every possible pronouncable (or not) combination of one to three consonants followed by “aydon” or “ayden”.

How long until we see some poor little Gayden going around?

The crippling homophobia of the bogan means that this will never occur. TBL

When my wife was in hospital recovering from the birth of our daughter Charlotte, one of the night shift nurses (also called Charlotte) told us that she’d come across a family (clearly bogan) who insisted she’d spelt her name wrong. “Sharlet” was apparently the one true spelling.

Dwayne has been mentioned. My white trash parents, in their wisdom, named me Duane. Words cannot describe how much I have hated my name. It is sad to contemplate how kids saddled with the bogue-fashion names of today will feel once they are old enough to begin asserting their own identity in the world.

Then again, I love bogans for bolstering our economy into the future. Imagine all the changes of names when Boguekids want to change their Boguenames to something decent and/or spellable?

Changing your name costs money. To the Government. Kah-ching!!!

My cousin, a paediatrician, tells of a new born who was named after a rising young actor (some 10+ years ago) – they pronounced the name “Jock-wynn”, after Joaquin (Phoenix)… if you’re gunna use the name, you probably should now how to pronounce it, yes?
although, in a US medical journal, she came across the name, pronounce “sha-theed”, spelled “Shithead” (a quick Google tells me it is not altogether uncommon in African-American circles)…

Kragen, pronounced Craygen. Female in case you were wondering.
I saw this a couple of weeks ago on Toddlers and Tiaras, a show about bogan kiddy beauty pageants in the US. It won’t be long now, some pregnant bogan will already have added it to her list.

Can someone please help me to explain to an American what a “bogan” is? I don’t think it’s quite the same as a “redneck” or a “hillbilly” – does anyone know what the US equivalent would be called?

All those guys in that awful film “knocked up” would be bogans in Australia for example :)

As would Paris Hilton, Britney Spears etc etc.. I guess Trailer Trash is definately one branch of the Bogan family tree.

However, Boganality is not defined by money or lack there of, one can be very wealthy and a total bogan, and be financially challenged and a total NON bogan.

Boganality is raceless, classless and financially independent, it is a state of mind and of being.

Having said that MOST Bogans are in the lower Socio-Economic groups, but definately not all, there are many in this country who have plenty of disposable income, those are known as Cashed Up Bogans.

Major Bogan characteristics may include (but are not limited too) …

*Total and utter disregard for anyone else around them.
*Total self absorbsion.
*Lack of reasoning or questioning thought about almost anything and everything.
*Group Mentality/Sheep like behaviour and spending patterns.
*Heavily influenced by Tabloid media.
*Tacky, and Tawdry taste in houses, furniture, cars, clothing, accessories.
*A Preference for Quantity over Quality – Bigger is definately Better.
*Prepencity towards Violence and Aggression (both sexes) and inability to resolve conflict other than with violence.
*Prepencity for drunkeness and thinking same is “Awesome” “Huge” “Going Hard” etc

etc etc.. I hope that helps.

For the record this is also posted on my own site, lest anyone think I have knicked it.

Overheard (well as it was actually screeched at the top of the Femme Bogues lungs hardly overheard.. but I digress) to a 3 or 4 year old girl in Westfields….

GET BACK HERE ………. Kiara (think Tiara as in the sparkly head wear beloved by Queens and Bogues alike)

how it was spelt I cannot say, no doubt in some utterly stupid manner. Keee-Ara no doubt.

Kameera, Liana, Shaniqua and Maleeka get back ere you little shits…

It was extremely hard to keep a straight face while walking past.

*Spelling has been guessed as there are no doubt endless combinations…
