It’s been decided that the sheer volume of offensively named offspring necessitates its own dedicated page. So here it is. Please submit your suggestions! The original blog entry about the bogan’s love of ridiculous child names can be found here.
Caution: The next person to recount “Le-a” or “Abcde” as a bogan baby name will be shot.

Any and all names that are lifted from celebrities – i.e. Brooklyn, Romeo & Cruise.
And please, good folks at TBL….never stop writing!! I can’t say it enough, this blog is spectacular.
From my son’s kindy (on the gold coast, bogan heartland):
Khyber
Destinee
T’Lea
Matylda
Brie
I can confirm (after subtle enquiry) that Khyber’s parents are not aware of either the Khyber Pass or the rhyming slang meaning – they just saw the name on list of place names and liked it. Other bogan kidlet names I have encountered:
Stoli
BeeJay
Stalin (little girl, her mum thought it sounded nice, like chanel)
Stalin! I guess we know who will the pants in any future relationships.
Stoli??? You gotta be shitting me…
“like chanel”
There was a kid in an article about this phenomenon called “Sheynelle”. I was laughing about how bad it was and someone said its a mispell of “Chanel”.
In the article, the mother said she (sic) “wanted her daughter to be an individual”
Zari (if only you knew what it went with)
Luella (ditto)
Ole George (ol’ George? “Youze got to get an apple when ‘ees ripe”)
Ayden
Bodhi
Boston
Orianna
Zander
Alycesaundra. Seriously.
Years ago I was speaking to a secretary at an office I worked at. Baby names came up in conversation and she told me a couple of the doozies she was planning. I can’t remember the particular names but they were all misspelt. I asked why on earth she was going to give her children misspelt names and she said it was so they would stand out. As if this typo in their name would be only thing memorable about them. Very sad indeed.
Recently from Frankston
Dwayne Pipe.
Just say it fast.
What about that New Zealand couple who wanted to call their son “four real”
I also think Shakira should be on the list as well.
in days gone by, i wonder if these names were considered avant garde…..
myrtle
thelma
maud
cynthia
perhaps they’ll be reclaimed by future bogans – but spelled differently. e.g.
mertell
thelmar
mawd
sintheeia
waddya think?
hmm, possibly, but i think the spellings will be worse – thellmaah, morede, syinthyiar.
A couple of years ago we had a family reunion with lots of historical information. There’s a picture an ancestor drew of “his” ship (ie the one he served on in the Navy?) with the title that looks like it says “Salacia”. Fine, until someone in the family named their new daughter “Salacia.”
Especially since I’ve since seen other handwriting by the same ancestor and other people in the era, and I’m pretty sure that the ship’s name was actually “Galacia” (which may be an area of Poland? does anyone here know?) …
Salacia is a horrible name for a girl because it refers to “salacious” – not a nice thing to call someone!
Salacia is a great name for an adult entertainer. It’s not a good name for a young girl.
omg – wikipedia tells me that Salacia may refer to:
Neptune’s wife in Roman mythology (see Salacia (mythology))
Maybe that WAS the name of the ship after all?
Makes sense.
Galicia is a part of Spain. Galatia is part of Turkey. Galacia, I’ve never heard of. Maybe Google Maps can help.
Galicia in Spain was actually named after the Galicia region in what is now Poland.
Even if Salacia is a reference to Neptune’s wife, it is still an unconscionably bogan thing to call a child.
But who’d live in Salacia Waters, the new overpriced development on the Gold Coast…you’d hope they’d have good parties…
Silesia is a part of Poland now, I think. I know it used to be part of Germany, but… things happened… and it is no longer.
My inlaws came from Galicia in Poland.
Do you know if that is a different area from Silesia, or just a Polish spelling of it?
I am HORRIFIED! My nice, fairly uncommon name has become a bogan staple (although it is rarely spelt correctly!) How about these for boganesque;
Yasinta (There is a rudiculous woman in the town near where I live (Horsham btw), who writes a truly inane weekly column in the local rag about the trials and tribulations of being a stay at home mum. Each of her four children has a completely BOGAN made up name, this is the only one I can remember, but rest assured, they are so completely BOGAN and hideous I am compelled to read her claptrap drivel. Yesterday, she banged on about having to take a clean set of knickers up to her “Miss Grade 2” at school as she had come a gutser in a mud puddle whilst chasing the boys. Yes folks, it is all going on out here in the boonies.) I will keep you posted on the names as they develop. I think we have a bogan name generator at the hospital here or something. There was a child named Calais around these parts last year, Mum loved Holdens don’t you know!!
Demi
Jai
Ky
Tiarna
Hudson Rex (Puhlease!?)
Allesia
Kelsey
Cailey
Seanna
Lexi
Wylie
Ava
Mya
I’m gonna make some up now!!
Rheanda
Zamelia
Waydon
Jerelle
Natisha Lee
That is enough.
Bogans are multiplying at previously inconceivable rates, it’s like whole orders of magnitude greater than we could possibly have imagined. It makes sense that they need to create new names for their offspring. Bring on the bogan viruses I say!!
Michaela, have you watched the movie ‘Idiocracy’? If not, you should. It’s funny but slightly freaky at the same time.
I am pretty sure my name – Tracy – should be in here.
but maybe it is an 80’s bogan name only.
It is certainly still bogan in the UK (chav)
also…McKayla !?! ahahahahahah
Aha! I have a variation not on the list.
Recently was informed that bogue XX and his wife XX have had a baby girl called…
“Madisyn”
Puke……
Shouldn’t it be “wife XY” ? ;p
Sorry – wrong way round – I just woke up :/
Should it be “Husband XY” ? ;p
I think you had it right the first time :-)
Nathan Buckley is doing his best for the cause – Jett!?
And his other kid Ayce. Ha Ha Ha.
What about “Lachlan”?
“Nevaeh” should be there, it’s “Heaven” backwards… so presumably means “Hell”
A misspelling: Rennay
My wife and I have a ‘name our unborn daughter’ competition going with family and close friends. Inspite of the ‘no bogan names or bogan spelling’ rules, Taylah and Rebekkah have been offered up.
The latest suggestion, from the sister of a friend, was ‘Candida’. I asked her if she thought that Cameron was a good middle name to go with Candida and whether we should ask the baby to smile…
Canida, I think a Greek name, is also the fungus which causes thrush.
i know it has been suggested as a bogan name, but rebekkah is the earlier biblical spelling of the name – rebecca is the anglicised variant.
Jean Kittson played a very ditzy aerobics instructor called Candida on “The Big Gig” and the name was HUGE joke.
http://www.icmi.com.au/Entertainer/Corporate_Humor/Jean_Kittson/Biography
This blasted quest to be “unique” !
I have a badge that says “Yes you are an individual – just like everybody else” :)))
What about the following names I have actually taught:
Dan-yel (a girl)
Halee
Cristel
Kory
…really? REALLY?
Last week on “Domestic Blitz” (i’m surprise there hasn’t been a article about that yet), there was a teenager called “Shanice” and one sister’s name – also starting with “S” if I correctly recall – was something similarly made up & misspelt in bogan-ese. Can anyone refresh my memory ? (One such name was probably all my brain could take).
Chantelle, its misspelt version Shantelle and, speaking of “Domestic bliss”, CHONTelle should be on that list !
when my daughter was in kindergarten, the whole class seemed convinced that their classmate (NOT my daughter!) Chantelle’s name was actually “Show’n’Tell”!
I’ve seen it mutate all the way to “Shondell”.
We had a property manager called Shauntelle once.
Minyon. Daughter of a local family of criminals.
My parents had a friend whose name was Mignonne, pronounced as Minyon. It’s a French name (and maybe therefore classy? I dunno…)
I THINK that spelling (Mignon) is in fact French argo for “cute”. I will check with a friend.
Yes, Mignon is French for cute and a perfectly fine name IMO. Also Miette.
Actually, a lot of the names in this thread are perfectly normal names in other countries/cultures. Bogans might have latched onto them here but that doesn’t make the names automatically awful.
Yes it does.
I know of a woman whose kids are called:
Dazhara
Druzai
Tezzina
Teizha
I would like to submit the names “Sham”, “Shae-leigh” “Tanika” “Dannika” and “Tre”
Sham?
Like Sham-Wow?
Scariest name ever?
Tyffaannii
Sounds like a bacterial disease caused by drinking water contaminated by sewage
I overheard this while standing with other parents at my son’s school:
Man: What’s your daughter’s name again?
Mother: Kotika (or something like that).
Man: Where’s that from?
Mother: It’s Indian.
Man: Is that Red Indian, or Curry Munching Indian?
Mother: I dunno!
“Maxtreme”?
Oh sorry, I meant “Maxxstreme”…
RICKEE!!!!!
check the ZOO magazine entry, #111 i think
definitely a bogan name with boganistic affiliation
I knew I shouldn’t have taken the bait.
But how do you one up your bogan chums when all their offspring already have mispelt stripper names? You tack an additional name on and hyponate it!
Not sure if its the case here (not sure if they are middle names or superfluous first names), but this is a bogan on facebook’s list;
Talesha Faith
Mikayla Leigh
Karrina Emily
If I was to reproduce I think I’d name it “dokta dray” regardess of gender.
Not too scary, but still suitably mispelled…
EmmaLee Jayde
I came across an American TV show on Drifting (Mega Xtreme Bogan Action) & the female host was named Bizee, pure gold.
I have a cousin who frequently fb status updates on the following
Two and a Half Men
Jacks n Coke
Speak english or PISS OFF
Her son – Brock Holden
Scarily, I think I might know your cousin…or someone very likely – though living in Bathurst for a while (for uni) might have brought me into closer proximity with a more intensely bogan class of bogans…
That is *supposed* to read or someone very like her…
Please stop this now – you are embarrassing yourselves and causing grief for their future teachers –
Alixzander
Jotham
Jahzara
Sharntelle
Making it up in the hope in makes them ‘unique’ only results in being uniquely bogan. Wanting to stand out from the crowd only results in standing out when ‘helping police with their inquiries’.
Oooh…now that I think about it, siblings my daughter went to play group with:
Jadzia and Denz’l
pretty sure that Jadzia was a character in Star Trek – looked like a woman, but actually possessed by a thing (not human)? Ring any bells?
That’s the one
Jadzia is actually a legitimate old name in Polish. English equivalent is Judith. It was my mother’s name.
Saw a notice in the hatches and matches announcements the other day: Saskia, Atticus and Mungo welcome their new sister Esmeralda Valentine.
Are they bogan, or do they have wannabe indy parents? I think with Mungo it might go either way.
Only because Atticus has to be a nod to To Kill a Mockingbird
My son’s middle name is Atticus for that very reason.
I’m certainly not bogan, and find the concept of being ‘wannabe indy’ equally distasteful.
I’m sorry…I phrased that badly. In this case, among those siblings there were names that could be bogan – (Saskia and Esemerelda) but that Atticus and Mungo that weren’t…hence my confusion.
I have to admit…I love unusual but not scary names myself, so Atticus made my shortlist, though it wouldn’t really have worked for my daughter, hence the not using it. It’s still shortlisted for any brother she might have though.
“,,,names that could be bogan – (Saskia and Esemerelda)”
Saskia is a normal Dutch name.
Rembrant’s wife (and model) back in the 1600’s had that name.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saskia_van_Uylenburg
I’ve always liked it. Its very rare here. Have the bogans taken it as their own ? Hope not !
Esmeralda is from The Hunch Back Of Notre Dame.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esm%C3%A9ralda_%28The_Hunchback_of_Notre_Dame%29
I picked my nephew up from kindy the other day and I saw the list of the kids names up alongside the blackboard.
Khyal
Rhyleah
Aleczander
and the cake-taker…
Jazabel (I s**t you not!)
jazabel?! wow. and i’m not even sure how to pronounce rhyleah – is it ‘riley’ or ‘rye leah’?
there’s always ry’leh…but I think Lovecraft might be a little too much – though I’m surprised I haven’t seen that in a Birth notice anyway
Hah!! I didn’t think of that.
I’m think I’m going to name my kid Cthulhu Fhtagn.
Nice!
Someone didn’t read their Bible before naming their child, did they ?
(quick ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jezebel scroll to “cultural symbol”)
Arki, FFS-
“Ladies and Gentleman, please welcome the President of Australia, Arki Bogan…”
Nup, another effed up bogan effort
Sigh. A friend of mine rang me to share her pain and hilarity at hearing of the name choice of an associate of hers. The newborn girl is called Kequila, and it was explained to her thus: “You know, like Tequila. But with a K.”
Kequila has an older brother, Coopa.
Sigh.
Isn’t Coopa the name of the bad guy in the Super Mario games?
Stop the presses. Here’s a double-shot of bogue for your Sunday morning.
national/billey-and-ridley-lampard-given-danger-as-middle-name/story-e6frfkvr-1225846444721
I truly do weep for the future….
Classic… read the comments there too – most people either say how cool it is, or criticise it for being old and already done by other bogans!
Someone has been watching Austin Powers movies.
Yep – it’s about 17 different sorts of wrong when “Pilot Inspektor” is held up as the name to beat.
I know of a baby called Indiana Danger. When the father told me I had to try desperately not to laugh (he was a client and I had to be nice).
I saw this local paper, Subiaco Post i think it was, they had a Jamaica.
Euw. Nasty.
In a similar vein, I spotted in today’s cretinous Sunday Mail a chap named Spida and his daughter Boston.
Since when is it appropriate for people to bestow upon their offspring the names of cities they’ve never visited, countries they couldn’t find on a map, or geographic regions (Savannah, Oshean’a, etc) which they couldn’t define with a gun to their head?
This place name stuff is not new nor necessarily bogan.
I think making it a blanket ruling is too much.
To me it depends on the choice of place name and, as you say the pretensiousness of the parents – the ir choice being incompaticble with THEM.
Jamaica as a girl’s name is nothing new. Jackson Brown wrote a song called “Jamaica say you will” in the early-mid 70’s, long before all this started. Joe Cocker recorded it in 1975. The character in the song was daughter of a sea captain, so I guess he supposedly had some valid reasons for the choice ?
“Gone with the Wind” had a character called India Wilkes. During the American civil war. Upper class.
Florence Nightingale was named for the city in which she was born, as was her sister Parthenope – and their parents were , again, upper social class.
But I think the Beckhams have something to answer for in this trend with their son Brooklyn (site of conception, allegedly)
Phenyox. I know I child who was recently named this, with the exact spelling here.
What about the timeless classic, Brogan.
I’ve seen BRAYden (a tribute to donkeys no doubt), Bodan, Bayden, Kayden, Kyden and Byden. They all make me sick.
Jayden is one of the worst qnd very prolific – Brittney Spears has a lot to answer for.
Just read the words “a tribute to donkeys” while drinking coffee – big, big mistake. BB, love your work!
Oh, pish and likewise tush. No bogue will pay tribute to a donkey until Brendan Fevola buys one. Certainly the captive specimen at work is bemused by my having two of them as animated lawnmowers. The bogue in question is the proud spawner of ‘Paige Maddison’.
But for old style bogan, it’s hard to beat a poor unfortunate in my mother’s home town. Her name was Yvonne – pronounced ‘Wivverney’.
OMG – just spotted “BROWDYN”.
It can’t be real – can it ?
Incredibly, it seems so … but one source says its Aussie (:/) and one says its derived from ancient French. Who to believe ?
Regardless, it is highly suspiticous to my mind.
1. http://www.babynology.com/meaning-browdyn-f6.html
2.
Ha!!!!!!
That poor child.
And Kaidan, whilst a really bad name to give to your offspring, at least there’s a role model:
And the name means ghost story in Japanese.
“Kaidan … means ghost story in Japanese.”
I was quickly assured recently by a grandmother that the spelling “Kayden” meant “fighter” in “Celtic”.
She was VERY swift to inform me of this – my face must have fallen – and I think she knows :/
What a quandry – to have a bogan-named grandchild when you disdain it yourself ! To appear “guilty by association” !
Actually (and I only know this because I was tragic enough to go look it up) it got Slavic origins…what does it matter though they both end in “c”, it’s got to be close enough.
“Kaidan” also means “flight of stairs” in Japanese.
The above link might not work, look it up on Google or something.
I bogan associate of mine named her child Kayden but spelt Cadyern. She told me it meant war lord
“She told me it meant war lord”
Yeah – I think she said similar … it resonates a bit. That’s what the “fighter” bit referred to (notion of noble warrior as distinct from street fighter) – she said something like that but then followed up with the reason for the name was the baby (who had hurdles to overcome) was (sic) “such a little fighter’ – that “fighter” that is what lept to mind when I wrote the post.
Did you mean ‘Caydern’ ? (or was it really Cadyern ?)
Brisbane footballer’s new baby girl:
Memphis Rayne.
FFS.
I was introduced to a young “Ryder” yesterday, how do we all feel about that?
Darshan is a Malaysian name, and quite common.
I’m wondering when some Bogan will catch on to the prefect ‘individuulle’ name of the cosmetic brand Jurlique to bestow upon their poor new daughter.
Imagine it pronounced with that Bogan twang. “Jurlique Maree” sounds like gold to me :)
Today I came across a child called Xaiden. I don’t know if that is the correct spelling. Apparently he was going to be Xavier but the parents changed their minds.
I just add this to the little girl at my kids school whose name is Krisma. I haven’t yet found the courage to ask why.
My question is, do they pronounce the X as a Z, or and H.
Assholes!
Ximena isn’t a bogan name.
Speaking of made up, what about Renesmee ?
Bella Swan’s mother and Edward Cullen’s “mother”‘s names combined, doncha know.
I predict we will see some little “Cullen” -s before too long.
BB, I named my son Edward, and someone asked me if I named him after Twilight I was horrified!!
Pinky, that’s horrific. Edward was on the shopping list of names for my son, too.
Ended up going with a simple classic: Tom. Yesterday, a bogue acquaintance asked “how we spelled it”. A friend reports a similar spelling query regarding his son, the phonetically trickily-named Dan.
Clearly, “Thhomme” and “d’Ann” would have been the go. Or “Jaxxszynn”.
I have a nephew named Tomas, but that spelling comes from his father’s Latvian heritage rather some bogan pretension.
Also, there’s an awesome Italian genre actor named Tomas Milian, so that’s cool too. :-)
Exactly. There’s a world of difference between heritage and wankery.
I still don’t see how I could have spelled “Tom” differently. Clearly, I’m a terrible mother and didn’t do enough to ensure my sole offspring had a unique, impossible-to-spell moniker. How will he EVER stand out!
What about “Thom” ? (not a dipthong)
Or Tohm ?
Or Tomm ?
I’m getting into the swing of this !
Bugger – you’re good.
Earlier, I did suggest “Thhomme”. And perhaps “d’Ann” for my friend’s child.
But Tohm has a kind of Viking-meets-Vietcong majesty about it. Dammit!
Bugger. You’re good.
Tohm has a sort of Viking-meets-Vietcong majesty to it. Dammit! Much better than Tom. Or T’homme
I hear your grief & frustration. Its never too late to change it. I believe deed-poll is long gone and you just start using it and making it known to everyone – and change records like schoolmmedicare etc as best you can etc. By the time he’s ready for driver’s licenses etc its a done deal. Perhaps you could enquire at the Department of Births, Deaths and Marriages, as this is all just hearsay ? ;>
Oops! Ballsed up with a duplicate. Sorry…
What about “Tombarina” ?
It’s staring you in the face !
A lovely-yet-unlikely name for a young lad.
(I fear he will get called “Thumbelina” at school though)
Egad, sir – you are truly a visionary!
Thankfully, though, I am happy to report Thumbelina taunts are unlikely – at 16, he’s a 6’4″ rugby second-rower!
:))) I thought we were talking about a littlie.
er, BTW, correction – I am a madam :>
He was once. Little, I mean. But if you keep feeding the buggers, they seem to keep growing.
Apologies for the gender-incorrect “egad”!
et une madame opulente parfaite im sur
OMG !
I am staring and gaping with disbelief.
There were 8 King Edwards in England alone, starting in the 1200’s.
(However, why do I imagine from one minute that a bogan would have even dim awareness of this ?)
Do tell more: eg how did you express your horror and how did they react to it ?
That is GOLD.
“Meleni”
Wayne.
That is all.
and his brothers Shane / Shayne, Dwayne and Zane.
Acid! Trippy.
There is also Shanae and Shanaya
What about….
Beeanchor
Seriously. Beeanchor.
What is the world coming to?
A Know a shocking set of names, 3 girls, Shanara Imogen, Indigo Pheonix & Brilee Alaska…. Yup only in lilydale!… And their friends kid is Jaylah Anne….
poor shanara doesn’t have a place name for a middle name. she must feel so left out.
I’ve got one for her: Narnia.
Not kidding – registered as a middle name in Qld.
That would make Shanara EXTRA special – a name of a place which doesn’t actually exist. Hurrah!
Freakshow parents might want to tweak that mainstream spelling, though…
ooh, very good. you’re right though, narnia isn’t strangely spelt enough. maybe nharneeyia? or narrni-ah?
– Marley and Presley (sisters).
– O’Shearnia (girl, spelling legally changed by parents after three weeks of age from ‘Oceania’ because that was way too mainstream).
– Buzzby (boy).
– Blaze (girl).
– Bacardee (girl).
– Mizty (girl).
– Blade (boy).
– Taneesha (girl).
– Several versions of Harley, especially Harli and Harleigh.
– Jayden/Bayden/Kayden etc.
– Twins Mackley and Janeka (girls).
Anferny (Someone who can’t spell Anthony)
No WAY??!!
J’ai des boules itchy
Yes way. I’ve seen it spelt “Anfernee”:
Well I can’t confirm that its true, but its still sadly funny. There used to be a facebook group that targeted baby bogan names, but shut down quite some time ago. Thats where I saw that (& other horrible names)
I know a kid named ‘Jden’. Seriously.
I know a Dannika, a Mikayla… if I were to go through the names of every kid at my school, I KNOW I’d find about a hundred bogan names with bogan spellings.
“Danger is my middle name”
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/danger-is-our-middle-name/story-e6frf7kx-1225846432347
They CAN’T be serious.
That’s already been discussed further up the thread,,,
“KOB (18:54:52) : I know of a baby called Indiana Danger.”
This is a different story: twins called Billie and Ridley. (“Riddles” to her school pals, no doubt. Do they stop for one second to think about playground taunting ?)
Nup. They’ll just glass ’em.
nope…exact same story, way back around the 28th.
Not that it really matters I guess
Tombarina (12:16:03) :
Stop the presses. Here’s a double-shot of bogue for your Sunday morning.
national/billey-and-ridley-lampard-given-danger-as-middle-name/story-e6frfkvr-1225846444721
I truly do weep for the future….
Pardon: I only saw an previous article about Indiana Danger and did not click on a url that had this information. This site does not allow deleting of posts.
I think you’ll find it’s “an URL”
try pronouncing it – its a “y” SOUND, thus “a” is appropriate.
wrong
Not according to the formal grammar text books I used when studying to be an ESL teacher.
See point 5 – exceptions: http://www.jalc.edu/departmentpages/english/pdfs/write_place_tutorials/17_advanced_study_guide_for_the_complete_use_of_A_and_An.pdf
Its about how its SOUNDS, not how it looks. If its a constanant sound / pronunciation, it gets “a”.
This is a place for discussion about Bogan names, not grammar.
I was just joking…
Saw this in the paper: the girl in the video – her name is GALEN.
Quite elegant really – except its a man’s surname.
entertainment/celebrity/cancer-stricken-dennis-hopper-gets-hollywood-star/story-e6frfmqi-1225846242163
These wankers (who see themselves as “Soul travellers” and whose spelling reveals them as from the North American continent) called their daughter “MOZART”. Again, a man’s surname.
http://www.soultravelers3.com/2007/07/selcuk-serenity.html
I am not sure if this is bogan or just pretentiousness. Thoughts ?
…presumably even Galen and Mozart had females in their lineage though?
Dillan- I called my dog dillan. Whats worse is he is a staffordshire bull terrier. double bogan.
I have a friend called “Nancy” and she is the biggest bogan I’ve ever known. She so needs to make this list.
Friends or friends have some good ones Shanara Imogen, Indiana Pheonix & Brilee Alaska…. hmm
My dog is called Phoenix. After the bird, not the place.
Ok, so some gems were found whilst flicking through the social pages of the “Out and About at Easter” section of our local “Bully” (the affectionate name of our newspaper in Townsville- The Bulletin).
What names should appear other than…?
Diesel.
Americus.
and the ABSOLUTE CLANGER……
Miley.
someone had to eventually go there didn’t they? I have been waiting for it!
not the first though – I have seen a new baby (it might even have been a year ago?) named Miley Hope. I’m told by my daughter that Miley Cyrus’ middle name is Hope? (Although her first name wasn’t Miley when she was born; that’s a contraction of “Smiley” which she was nicknamed as a child but unable to pronounce with baby teeth or something. She’s since changed her name to Miley by deed poll or similar.)
Actually, it’s Destiny Hope Cyrus… even worse.
Oh, and I did come across siblings called Diesel and Jett once. I think their next sibling should be Petrol or Ethanol, personally
My husband got a great one at work today:
Sjohn – and here’s the killer – his mother said it was pronounced “John”…
I’ve come across a “Saint John” which is pronounced S’john, I think, but that was a character in a book.
hang on a sec (wish we could delete posts here!) i think “Saint John” was pronounced “SinJin”
Its Spelt St John and said Sinjin or Sinjon.
St John Rivers was a character in Jane Eyre.
http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/janeeyre/canalysis.html
I would never have deemed this to be a bogan name -just extremely rare nowadays. it was largely used around the Victorian era – and not notably by the bogan classes
http://www.babynamewizard.com/namipedia/boy/st-john
It would appear that this name has been the victim of a bogan hijack…
Also middle name of one of the characters (from memory, the one with the mo and thinning blonde hair, who married the nymphomaniac) in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
I remember the scene when the name was uttered repeatedly – Rowan Atkinson was the vicar.
(1 min, 44 seconds)
My friend’s little siblings were named Kia Maria (yep all her first name, maria wasn’t even her middle name) and Bailey. alcholic parents or what
The worst I’ve personally seen is a couple calling their kid Keanu. Their last name is Reeve. Another shocker is Drackos. Don’t even know where to begin on that one! If anyone knows a story behind the name Drackos I’d love to hear it.
Isn’t the kia a very obnoxious, destructive, nuisance of a NZ bird ?
The first time I heard “Bailey” I was overseas and had been for a long time and was blissfully unaware of the evolving plethora of bogan names.
I was rendered speechless. My first utterence afterwards was “Why did they name their kid after an alcoholic drink ?”
Saphron – it’s a nice enough name for a girl, but get the spelling right!!
…..and LEATHER for her twin brother. ROTFPMSL
From “That’s Life” magazine – Brylee and Storme
That’s kind of shooting fish in a barrel :) . It is a fabulous source of “names to never use” though.
I’ve seen a Zhen-nee (i.e. Jenny). At school there was a Chantelle, a Chantel and a Chantal in the same class. But my favourite goes to the New Zealanders who named their twin boys Benson and Hedges.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7522952.stm
That poor child.
Don’t get me wrong, I love unusual real – as opposed to made up – names…but I hope that poor little girl gets therapy to help get over being saddled with a name like that.
From my teaching days:
– Princess (her surname was ‘Smith’ – perhaps they wanted a first name that stood out from a common surname)
– Pooja (she was Indian – but poor thing living in Oz and growing up with a name like that)
– Candy (this was when I was teaching in America – and she was a VERY big 10 year old – one big bit of Candy!)
– Bud-dee
– Chastity
– Destiny
Love, love, love your work!
Have heard a couple of shocking names recently – not sure if these ones are real or made up. Two sisters called, wait for it – Genna and Tahlia. Say the names together really fast!
Another one, and this is for real, I know a woman who named her daughter Sian but didn’t know how to pronounce it. It should sound like ‘Shahn’ (bogan plus anyway) but this woman pronounced it ‘Sigh – Ann’. For real.
I teach a girl who pronounces her name, Sian, as “see-arn” – but I don’t think that is too uncommon…
Jayla
Zahli. The newest daughter of a friend of mine. What a wank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
have a distant relative in the US(mums second or third cousin/uncle?) whose first name was Cock! Too make matters worse his surname was a Dutch name-Van Lesbian.Anyway he was an aspiring actor who just couldnt get a gig until his agent gently suggested that maybe his unusual name was working against him as they both knew there was nothing wrong with his chosen craft.Anyway they tweeked is name a bit and wholah.Today Dick Van Dyke is not just a household name in North America, but known throughout the world.
Bollocks.
true story Shirley M he came out here too attend my Great Grandma’s 90th
Cock Van Lesbian? You’ve been had.
have i?
http://www.snopes.com/humor/jokes/vandyke.asp
DId you know they’ve taken the word “Gullible” out of the dictionary?
Unbelievable how people on opposite sides of the world can come up with the same thing without any knowledge of each other-bizarre!
Have i mentioned my Uncle who had a race horse called Myf Ace? I think maybe i have.
The other day, I kid you not, I saw in the birth announcements for twins Shantaeya Sindi and Tylarr Ondray Smith, the children of Muriel and Daniel.
It was like a boganfest of fail.
“Tylarr Ondray” – it just occurred to me – could this sort of utter nonsense actually be NOT be an attempt to be “individual” and “unique” at all, but arise purely from the parents’ inability to spell it correctly ?
Yes. I know a bogan who bestowed his mini-bogue with “Shy-ann”, not realising that neither the Native American tribe nor the Wyoming city he is pretty unlikely to visit are in actual fact spelled, “Cheyenne”.
Other bogues I know, inadvertently going the phonetic route, have abused Christopher (Kristapha), Asia (Aiysiah, shit you not), and of course, the obligatory Michaela (Mikaylah). Amongst myriad others, but it’s too depressing to go on. Suffice it to say, most of the girls’ names end in, “ah”, and most of the boys, “ayden”
“Suffice it to say, most of the girls’ names end in, “ah”, and most of the boys, “ayden””
That is a very neat summary and, in fact, a valuable screening tool !
Maybe TBL could make a name creator like their wedding vow generator ? Or at least a set of formulas ?
I completely blame Queen Brittny (or however its spelttainly not normally or correctly) Spears, of the Bogans for all the “Jaydens”.
spelt, certainly…
Sorry – I wish we could edit & delete here !
I’ve been meaning to contribute for a while now, and I’ve decided to do it scientifically …
First I found my daughter’s school magazine, looked through the photos and started writing down bogan names. I had planned to do all years, but by the time I’d got through K-2 I had had enough.
Then I Googled “name meanings”, and used the first two sites to eliminate the real names which I’d not heard of.
Then I removed the names that had already been mentioned on this page.
The list …
Bluede
Calaeb
Caprhyse
Daffa
Destiny-Rose
Enessa
Graydon
Haegan
Jekope
Keian
Keilee
KeiraLee
Kiarna
Kyya
Lily-Rose
Micaylah
Shakara
Shantii
Tahleia
Zamba
Now, I am sensitive to the fact that some non-Anglo names look strange to Anglo eyes. I have removed a couple of names because I know that the child is not from an Anglo background. The remainder – well let’s just say that they have Anglo surnames and look Anglo – plus we all live in a country town.
I think the only solution is to empower the Office of Birth, Deaths and Marriages to correct spelling before issuing Birth Certificates.
Ha, thanks Grant (and other recent contributors). We’re writing blog posts flat out at the moment, so we haven’t had a chance to update our big list of bogan names in a while. When we do, though, all of the new additions will get on there! TBL
“the only solution is to empower the Office of Birth, Deaths and Marriages to correct spelling before issuing Birth Certificates.”
Wouldn’t that be fantastic ?
A bit like Ellis Island in NYC “anglicising” non- English-siunding surnames as imkigrants were processed there – without asking.
Not very much like Ellis Island. At Ellis Island they were adults with established identities and personalities. Here we are talking about newborns with stupid parents.
Its exactly the same as Ellis Island in that the authorities made value judgements re what people should be called and changed names officially with no consultation with the person.
In the case of the types of names listed here – I’m all for it.
“the only solution is to empower the Office of Birth, Deaths and Marriages to correct spelling before issuing Birth Certificates.”
I once taught a boy whose name, he insisted, was spelled “MIcheal.” Poor boy, probably a mistake by bogan parents, but he’s going to have spent his life spelling out his name for officialdom. (Come to think of that, that was more than 25 year ago… wonder if he reads columns like this now?)
“Graydon”. I can’t can’t believe it. We are plumbing new depths.
Names that end in “den / dan / don” are definitively bogan.
Names that end in “elle” are not far behind.
Narelle, Shanelle and Sharelle have to be some of the worst. But they were more 70’s.
It’s like they’ll try every possible pronouncable (or not) combination of one to three consonants followed by “aydon” or “ayden”.
How long until we see some poor little Gayden going around?
The crippling homophobia of the bogan means that this will never occur. TBL
A friend of mine works with a child named
La-a (Ladasha)
Say no more
No! Read the bold text at the bottom of the list! Go to your room! TBL
When my wife was in hospital recovering from the birth of our daughter Charlotte, one of the night shift nurses (also called Charlotte) told us that she’d come across a family (clearly bogan) who insisted she’d spelt her name wrong. “Sharlet” was apparently the one true spelling.
Local bogan with two boys names Dustee and Dirtee, and he has them tatooted on his arms.
Pregnant woman (beauty therapist)- it’s a girl.
Jasaideez.
She wanted to call it Mercedes but husband preferred Jamilla.
Best of both worlds!
I’m not much of a bogan, but my daughters name is Aleah, which to me sounds a whole lot better then Leah.
Dwayne has been mentioned. My white trash parents, in their wisdom, named me Duane. Words cannot describe how much I have hated my name. It is sad to contemplate how kids saddled with the bogue-fashion names of today will feel once they are old enough to begin asserting their own identity in the world.
self loathing is ugly dude
In today’s The West Australian, the sole birth notice was:
Jaxon Taj
[retch retch]
After that crazy Sheikh Taj el-Din al-Hilali? :)
Then again, I love bogans for bolstering our economy into the future. Imagine all the changes of names when Boguekids want to change their Boguenames to something decent and/or spellable?
Changing your name costs money. To the Government. Kah-ching!!!
There is at least one child in Australia with the forename “Lestat”. I have personally sighted the medicare card. Someone’s mother was having sex-with-the-bloodsucking-dead fantasies…
have recently come across Memphis, which is already on the list… but this poor sod was a boy :(
and also Cassidy, for a girl
My cousin, a paediatrician, tells of a new born who was named after a rising young actor (some 10+ years ago) – they pronounced the name “Jock-wynn”, after Joaquin (Phoenix)… if you’re gunna use the name, you probably should now how to pronounce it, yes?
although, in a US medical journal, she came across the name, pronounce “sha-theed”, spelled “Shithead” (a quick Google tells me it is not altogether uncommon in African-American circles)…
Kragen, pronounced Craygen. Female in case you were wondering.
I saw this a couple of weeks ago on Toddlers and Tiaras, a show about bogan kiddy beauty pageants in the US. It won’t be long now, some pregnant bogan will already have added it to her list.
What about these rippers:
Sonny Jag
Summer Harmony (no kidding a girl I went to school with ..MANY years ago)
Autum Rayne (Summer’s sister!!)
Chloi Ophelia (I get the Hamlet reference, but if you have read Hamlet why can’t you spell CHLOE!!!!!!)
Shae Rae
This site has brightened up my afternoon…pure gold.
Just thought of another, Melody Issa, her idiotic parents couldn’t decide between Melody & Melissa so made both possible! WTF!!
Can someone please help me to explain to an American what a “bogan” is? I don’t think it’s quite the same as a “redneck” or a “hillbilly” – does anyone know what the US equivalent would be called?
The closest is probably a guido. Tell him/her that they are like extreme Guidos but they cover all races.
Joe six-pack?
All those guys in that awful film “knocked up” would be bogans in Australia for example :)
As would Paris Hilton, Britney Spears etc etc.. I guess Trailer Trash is definately one branch of the Bogan family tree.
However, Boganality is not defined by money or lack there of, one can be very wealthy and a total bogan, and be financially challenged and a total NON bogan.
Boganality is raceless, classless and financially independent, it is a state of mind and of being.
Having said that MOST Bogans are in the lower Socio-Economic groups, but definately not all, there are many in this country who have plenty of disposable income, those are known as Cashed Up Bogans.
Major Bogan characteristics may include (but are not limited too) …
*Total and utter disregard for anyone else around them.
*Total self absorbsion.
*Lack of reasoning or questioning thought about almost anything and everything.
*Group Mentality/Sheep like behaviour and spending patterns.
*Heavily influenced by Tabloid media.
*Tacky, and Tawdry taste in houses, furniture, cars, clothing, accessories.
*A Preference for Quantity over Quality – Bigger is definately Better.
*Prepencity towards Violence and Aggression (both sexes) and inability to resolve conflict other than with violence.
*Prepencity for drunkeness and thinking same is “Awesome” “Huge” “Going Hard” etc
etc etc.. I hope that helps.
For the record this is also posted on my own site, lest anyone think I have knicked it.
Overheard (well as it was actually screeched at the top of the Femme Bogues lungs hardly overheard.. but I digress) to a 3 or 4 year old girl in Westfields….
GET BACK HERE ………. Kiara (think Tiara as in the sparkly head wear beloved by Queens and Bogues alike)
how it was spelt I cannot say, no doubt in some utterly stupid manner. Keee-Ara no doubt.
visiting my local Woolworths… a woman with approximately 7 children in tow and 3 trollies was yelling at the top of her lungs…
Kameera, Liana, Shaniqua and Maleeka get back ere you little shits…
It was extremely hard to keep a straight face while walking past.
*Spelling has been guessed as there are no doubt endless combinations…
