hi there! Well the ah beng that is being described seems to be the oldest and most general description of one. ‘ah beng’ used to be a term used to describe gangsters that were part of a underworld triad back in the day, and yes they were mostly uneducated guys that wore loud clothing. you can find some good pics from the following link:

these days it pretty much means an uneducated an uncouth person, who speaks bad english (singlish) usually littered with expletives from Chinese dialects. It’s not necessarily how they look, but how they act. As shown in this clip from a popular English sitcom in singapore

Then check the facts SD…. The LAND is not capable of FEEDING a large population without being irrevocably damaged/changed. It is not farm-able soil….It’s DESERT! Water’s great….tried EATING it?
At the rate our arable land is being sold off to other counties, (for THEIR tables),we will be totally dependent on importing the vast majority of our food within 50 years…. Yep, you can sit in your townhouse in the middle of Lake Eyre & wonder if your grandchildren will thank you….

Desalinate and populate??
That takes care of the water Sibyl, what do you suggest we feed all these new souls? The land certainly can’t be cropped, there’s precious little in the way of arable fields in a desert, that’s what makes it a desert!
To change any of that would be to endanger our precious flora & fauna, unique to this country…. I for one would rather preserve our country.
Surely humans are intelligent enough to realise if we keep breeding unchecked, we will destroy the very planet that sustains us all?

Skank? That’s harsh. I imagine you wouldn’t use such a sexually derogatory term if she was a he.
Additionally, running a desalination plant requires much more energy than can be harnessed from alternative power sources. And what do you plan on doing with the super saline water?
There’s desert for a reason and Australia doesn’t need to be bulging at the seams like the good ‘ole USA. It would destroy the environment at an even greater rate than we are managing now.
And by the way, these are actually PEOPLE we’re talking about. Not dogs that need a temporary kennel to stay in.

Squawking for nuclear?

Perhaps if you did some research into modern nuclear power production plants and the disposal methods of the wastes produced therein, you would join the peanut gallery and begin squawking yourself.

It’s all well and good to say solar and wind is the way of the future, because yes, it is. Far in the future, when solar panels are more efficient, more reliable and cheaper. Wind power is great, don’t get me wrong. If I could, there’d be a wind trubine on the roof of my apartment right now. The problem is storage of the intermittant power output of the turbine to enable a consistant supply. Solar suffers from the same intermittant output foibles.

Funnily enough the whole saga is not such big news over here. I think the locals are so used to such tales.. that it all seems quite normal.

The hot weather on the other hand is driving everyone batty. Mrs Antosha included. Last night it was 33 degrees at 9.30 pm !!!
