#3 – Tramp Stamps

19 10 2009

It’s not news that a typical bogan is impulsive, vulgar, and eager to acquire gravitas and respect through superficial means, but it’s an important part of why they have such a strong affiliation with artless tattooing. While there can sometimes be a blurred delineation between male and female bogan behaviour, nevertheless there remains some sort of desire for the female bogan to present herself with feminine elements. This is often manifested in the alarmingly liberal application of cheap cosmetics and female fragrances, along with apparel that betrays abundant information about her physique. After initial confusion as to how the female bogan could acquire tattoos while still retaining some semblance of femininity, the solution was found: tramp stamps.

Tramp StampThe tramp stamp is a tattoo on the small of the female’s back, typically between 4cm by 4cm and 10cm by 10cm, though some tribal specimens have been observed that cover the entire rear span of the muffin top. The female bogan seeks not warrior symbols such skulls, flames, or sporting team logos, making the list of acceptable designs quite short. It includes dolphins, butterflies, and love hearts – images that deceptively suggest that the female would make a good mother. Another favourite is Asian lettering. In a notable departure from her usual discrimination against Asian people, she embraces their alphabets to convey lofty ideals such as hope, friendship, and loyalty. Tribal patterns are also permitted, though typically less angular and robust than those found on the male.

Why the lower back? Possibly as a display of plumage whilst getting ploughed from behind, but more likely as a misguided attempt to be discreet. When the female bogan observes herself in the mirror, she typically only sees the front of her body. Lacking the self-awareness to realise that anyone standing behind her is observing the other side, she forms the opinion that she has found the ideal way to augment her appearance without sacrificing her perceived likeness to classier women. Also problematic is the female bogan’s tendency to wear ill-fitting clothing, exposing large amounts of back real estate every time she bends over to belt her recalcitrant children.

The highest level of this has to be the name of the boyfriend tattooed on the lower back – supreme bogan art….

Poor, short sighted decision making by people who think they are “expressing” themselves. Tattoos are just a fashion which will pass, so all that full body stuff going around at the moment will soon look as out of place as the tribal crap from 5-10 years ago.

chrissa,
tattoos have been round for thousands of years and are still the most common form of art owned by people.

That’s true James, but that is hardly an argument that tattoos are either good or bad. If people need to express themselves through art, so be it. But if it is low-brow, common or “fashionable” then people such as myself will point that out, regardless of whether it’s a tattoo, tasteless clothing, street “art”, poor music. Anyway, why do these people feel the need to define themselves through cheap art? Why not actions and ideas?

Actions and ideas are fine but so is art, as the Galleries would insist. I don’t like much tattoo artistry but some of it is also excellent. I agree that “fashionable” is a really bad criterion to judge anything by, especially something with supposed longevity like tattoos. However, “common” and “low-brow” are almost nonsensible concepts to throw around. Most of the stuff that Shakespeare and Mozart produced are about as common and low-brow as you can get, and yet it is almost universally recognised for its inherent genius and artistic value. And “cheap” art? Ideas, as you suggest, are the cheapest of all; and tattoos are very often meant primarily to express ideas (usually symbols), rather than the images themselves … just like most good art.

But rather than being a ‘tramp stamp’, the tattooed name of a significant other/children/zodiac is otherwise known as the ‘bogan slogan’.

Arm bands, either celtic or barbed wire, are the male version. Also the Asian character (which I think might actually mean “Closed Sundays”) also does the trick, though lately Hebrew or Arabic text has become the new Asian character. How worldly.

I agree with James here.

Not all tattoos are degrading or cheap or meaningless. Do you also dislike people with piercings, makeup or fashion sense? While the tramp stamps are arguably a staple of the Bogan, there is a lot of examples of unique body art out there not intended to impress you, but often have a special meaning to those that display it.

(for the record, I do have a tattoo myself and I’m proud of what it means to me)

Of course you like your tattoo. What are you going to do? Admit you fucked up and now have this stupid thing on your lower back that every other man and his dog has got?

It’s like if you spend $5000 for the latest and greatest plasma but it’s a dud. What are you going to do? Tell everyone you were ripped off and you were a fool or pretend that it was a great deal and you’re really happy with it? Exactly.

Like I tell my kids, that new shirt you got last Christmas that you don’t wear anymore because you’ve grown tired of it, well bloody well think very hard about getting a tattoo for the very same reason. Forever is a long time.

Tatts are like art, some are crap, tasteless, mindless copies for drones that won’t have an original thought from birth to death and others are original creations with strong meanings, great designs, beautiful colours & lines that suit the person that chose them.

Stereotyping tatts is like racism, sexism etc, it’s a lazy way of mass consigning people into a sub-group and pretending they’re inferior to you to make yourself feel better.

Don’t like tattoos? Then don’t get one, but bagging the masses of working class people who choose to take a certain piece of art or designs with them on their journey through life, no matter how cliched or over used you (or I) think that art piece may be, says more about your intolerance than it does about their choices.

Reply

Well put, and it’s stereotyping that defines half of the Bogan identity. To me, the North Shore wannabe is no more bogan than the Australian “intellectual” who listens to classic music on ABC because that is “sophisticated” (maybe they even affect a pseudo-British accent when discussing art and music). Almost all Australians are bogans, but it is still funny to satirise the particular type of bogan focussed on here in these pages.
In contrast, you’re not a bogan if you choose your own choices, live the way you choose, wear whatever you choose, listen to whatever music you actually like, whether it be classic music or Meshuggah or Michael Bublé (though I’d be really sceptical of anyone who claimed to like the latter). It’s about being your own person and making your own choices, evaluating life and your place in it with awareness, rather than automatic submission. In fact, it’s possible though very unlikely, that you could do everything that bogans do without being one yourself.

Unfortunately I have a tramp stamp of a goblin on the small of my back. However I am extremely non-bogan. It was a moment of rebellious insanity as a teenager and I freely admit I did it just to say I had a tattoo and to be “different”. Thank God I’m older and wiser now, however there’s no chance of removing the damn thing (at the very least it’s actually a really well done tatt…but it has absolutely no meaning whatsoever….WHY?!)

goblin,
I bet when you had it done you felt empowered? you were running your life. not the opinions and prejudices of others. Even though you have more mature taste in art now I would hazard a guess that the empowerment has left its mark on your personality that is still evident. Oscar Wilde said “remember thath the only person that you must live with for the rest of your life is yourself” A tattoo is one way that some draw a line in the sand.
I have a large number of tatts , all covered by a tee shirt ,out of deference to the conservative moraes of employers. Still I do not regret any of them though I did start at an age where some thought went into the story line behind the works.
Still bet your hubby loves it? Cause it shows a streek of wickedness in you??

Tattoos were rebellious in the 60’s and 70’s. Today they are just fall into the realm of mainstream body decoration. Most of the images or text I see on people’s bodies are just too pedestrian and too derivative to fall into the realm of art. The same can be said for piercings – which are simply fashion accessories.

Reply

Slightly true but only slightly: tats have a long, long tradition, and for the last couple of millenia, it was big in Britain (to take one strand of Australian heritage), in waves of culture but independent of class. Often, it was to signify relationships or identity, and this is also true today, even when it is just a fashion statement. Rebellion of the sort that you are talking about is mostly fashion and partly other sorts of identity. Certainly, most tats obtained on impulse, and maybe even most tats all in all, are poor art and not worth keeping for life, but there is still a lot of worthwhile tat symbolism and art. The most important factor to distinguish the good tats from the bad is whether your tat is off-the-shelf or something that actually means something to you; whether the tat is for show or for yourself.

What about before anyone is made, in the name of education, to go to some bogan meeting of who has the most ridiculous inking, you go finish your primary school education and learn how to spell?

Or am I being narrow minded?

It’s interesting to see that boguns try to emulate anti-authority alternative types but in a totally unoriginal way. Where once the tattoo was a good indication of a person’s background, eg: sailor, criminal, circus performer, wharfie or even an alternative arty type ( the latter having usually quite unique and original artwork). Now we see every Cheryl, Norelle and Katy with a tacky angel, heart, fairy (usually on the shoulder blade) and of course the welcome mat at the base of the spine in the form of agressive tribal stylings – not even in keeping with the culture of the person. That’s why a bogun is a bogun – making one unoriginal, boring and cheap.

Interesting comment Michael I started getting tattoos at about the same time I became involved with the cabaret circus/freak show genre. Never thought about it much but most of the people in the industry that I know have tattoos. Probably as much because they are artistic individualists as anything.
Certainly not through any desire to conform with anything and certainly not because of “boganism”

Amazing. It never occurred to you that by trying not to conform to anything, you copied the ideas of the freak show brigade…and conformed to them!
Ahhh…. there’s nothing like a person who copies everyone else in their peer group in order to become an individual.

I have yet to see a tatt that looks as good as the owner thinks it does. I actually prefer tatts that have been thought out as to placement on the body and what will accentuate the body. I have no particular love for little pictures on skin – if the canvas is the body, the art should suit the canvas. Something that would look better in a square frame will never look great on a body.

Tramp stamps look better than a lot of things, but no I would not get one and yes, it has become a mark of bad taste – particularly because it is a fashion and all fashion ends up trashed at some point.

Lots of tats are poor art and incongruous with their “canvas” but there are still good tats.
Once-fashionable tats are in bad taste if they were obtained for their fashion-value; however, “bad taste” is never a good reason for not getting anything, just like “good taste” is never a good reason for getting something.

I do not have tattoos. I believe anyone who thinks, oh I am empowered by getting someone to draw on me is so shallow and lacking in any self awareness as to negate pretty much any of their argument on said activity (please read this comment carefully it is not a dig at people who get tattoos in general). They are art for sure, Mcdonald’s is also food I don’t eat that shit either.

Just because people have different tastes to your own doesn’t make them closed minded. Just because you feel the need decorate your body with art to cover the skin you are in does not mean others who do not follow suit are uptight and prejudiced. I love riding mountain bikes, I see them as beautiful objects and works of engineering art. Would I get one put on my face, arm, leg, back, ass, or other body part? No, perhaps a poster on the wall or sketch one or two myself.

Tramp stamps are so clichéd, “tribal” scribble at the bottom of your back is not empowering or artistic, almost 100% of the time it is just another ill thought out fad jumped on by rebellious and vacant youths following the latest trend.

Two of my good mates are tattoo artists, they don’t think everyone needs a tattoo, they certainly don’t dig on tramp stamps. But then they aren’t closed minded.

Tatoos are rough. Rough people get tatoos. I look at these enourmous tatoos on young girls, and wonder how they’ll look on flabby wrinkled arms when they’re 70. Heck, in just a few years the colours will have faded, and the lines will be blurred.. a few more years and they’ll be dabby purple things.

I would have to disagree with you on this one ant.
I have numerous tattoos on my arms, legs and back and I certainly am not rough.
All of my tattoos mean something and I do not wear clothing to show off my tattoos all the time like I see a lot of these Bogans do.
Most people would not even know that I have as many tattoos as I do because they are not for anyone else. They are for me. This is the problem that I see with these bogues getting tattoos nowadays. A fair bit of the time they are trying to impress other people with their tatts. Not much thought has gone into it and they do it because they have become popular and everyone else is doing it.
I have a quote on the small of my back written in “old English” and I am now embarrassed by it due to the sudden trend in these tramp stamp sluts.
I got mine done years ago when there was no such thing as a tramp stamp.
These wankers have ruined it for the rest of us!
I also don’t care what my tattoos will look like when I am 70 because everyone gets old. Everyone will have wrinkly arms and I don’t flash too much arm now even, so I doubt I will be doing it when I am older.

Actually Australia is a bad place for tatts longevity as the UV light index is very high – so the inks will inevitably fade and bleed if in exposed position to natural light. For simple example leave a news paper on dashboard of car for a week and see what happens to the (vegetable) inks used in them, they will fade out quickly and a strong blue will be what remains dominant. Same principle with tatts, and the coloured inks will fade at differing rates, those bright yellows and greens etc now popular will go first.

Those big thigh tatts on girls currently fashionable will look the worst of all in ten years time, faded out on expanding fleshy thighs.

At the end of the day, some Tatts are shit, some are amazing. If your a fuckwit, you’ll be overlooked by society regardless of what your Tatt looks like. To put it simply, you didn’t pay for it, you didn’t go through the strangely enjoyable pain and for all the ridiculously close minded people posting on here, you don’t have to talk to Tattooed people (that making you more odd than someone with Ink).

I only just got my first one, and it means a lot to me, and I’ve had nothing but compliments from both sexes, “Peace” in cursive with a old style scroll underline, angled across my neck, about 4x9cm, I only had the one parent and she was for most part abusive and misguided who family and friends believed she had serious issues, evidently she had enough to take her own life on my 21st, at 23 I had peace done because she now has it and i have it knowing that. Means the world to me whenever i look in the mirror and that’s all that matters, we all die, we all get old.

love Tatts, always have and plan to continue my story with my canvas as some have put it, i don’t recall who said it but “Why can’t we all just get along”…

I see the appeal in them. Why doesnt anyone put up WHITE WEDDING DRESSES…comeone…MOST Brides these days have been “PLOUGHED” 4 or 5 times by 4 or 5 men before getting married…surely thats more Boganish….maybe fireworks at a wedding..how about Gold Coast weddings for people from Victoria. Maybe designer Wedding dresses.

If your not a virgin…then the white dress is lost on you…and no amount of sequins and puffs and white bullshit…will cover up the fact that your a slut.

I think everyone putting this kinda stuff down all the time are lonely, low self esteemed people, who think that thier shit doesnt stink and just becasue they dont do something…they are SOOOOOO much better than everyone…and can cast dispersions about people who do these things.

NO-ONE needs to think before getting a tattoo…something for the rest of your life is a measly 80 years…who cares…its not forever…and I wouldnt be ashamed of doing any of the stuff on this site. What…am I supposed to live my life to the rules set down by this website so people think im not a bogan…I couldnt care less what people think… Grow Up, Harden Up, and for crying out loud…SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Chrisgeo,
before making sweeping generalisations about tatts of mine have a look at them. Just double click on my nane and go to my web site.. Not a wave to be seen.
The front is a wide selection of Australian wild life on a blue sea background with a shadow of Celtic knot work.
The back is the story of evolution from an original in the Smithsonian.
The celtis bit represents where my family comes from, the Australin wildlife represents where I am and the sea is the oceans over which we arrived here. The back (evolution) represents where we all came from.
The two side as yet uncompleted, will have a square rigged sailing ship representive of how my ancesters came across the seas and the other side will be a raunchy cherube reflective of the good things in life and a statement on the uncertainty of the future which may or not have an afterlife.

So Chrisgeo, what say you ?

Much like the difference between the skills it takes to create a unique peice of artwork and the skills it takes to then copy that peice, a tattoo artist once explained to me that there are two types of tattoos: there’s the type thats displayed on the boards at the front and they’re called ‘flash’ designs. They’re common, popular looking pictures and can be seen in pretty much any tattoo parlour anywhere. All the tattoo artist has to do is copy that design onto the flesh. The folks that get these ‘flash’ tattoos are generally people who just drop in to the tattoo parlour, look at the ‘flash’ and decide that they want ‘that’ one, and try to get it done there and then. These folks are probably getting their tatt as a fashion statement, and the odds are that they are bogan.

The other type of tattoo is a custom designed tattoo, and is the equivalent of commisionng an artist to design and create the particular image you want. The folks that get these have already got an idea of what they’re trying to express and usually have at least a general idea of how they want it to look and where they want it placed. They are happy to make several appointments with the tattoo artist and together they will work on the design & placement so that they are both happy with the outcome. The wearer has to be happy, but the artist also has to be happy that his/her artwork is going to be looked after and displayed properly. The creation and design process can take months in and of itself to get it 100% right before any ink is applied to the skin. Because getting this latter type of tattoo takes a much bigger commitment both in time and money and certainly can’t be delivered on a drunken Saturday night blinder, they invariably have great meaning to the person wearing the tatt. As bogans have no sense of delayed gratification nor imagination to think up a design that has some form of meaning to them, it is unlikely that a bogan would go to the effort of co-designing a custom tatt over a number of appointments with the designer/artist and then sit for multiple sessions to get a properly designed, custom built and unique peice of body art when the flash is already there and the “hard part” already done for them.

I don’t have any tattoos myself, but my husband does – and you’ll never see any other tattoo like the ones he has because every single one is utterly unique and deeply meaningful for him. I like the art, but don’t want to undergo the pain, so instead of a tatt, I got my husband’s artist to draw a picture for me instead, and got it framed. It cost me as much as a tattoo – which is fair enough, the amount of work was the same, only the canvas was different.

The ‘tramp stamp’ by its nature has to look similar to other ‘tramp stamps’ otherwise it wouldn’t be a ‘tramp stamp’ it would just be a tattoo on the lower back. Even if there are custom elements, the thing must look like ‘ass antlers’ to be a ‘tramp stamp’ and therefore it is almost *by definition* almost all “flash” rather than custom-designed. And therefore, but my tattoo-artist’s description, they are not creating anything new and expressing themselves for who they are, they are merely taking someone else’s image and claiming it as their own.

I have professional, accomplished, patently non-bogan friends who have succumbed to the tattoo craze in recent years. Not in a “SuperMax” bogan way, but in a subtle manner, on an easily hidden portion of their anatomy and with a personal design. Nevertheless, I am certain that this ill thought out, distinctly Gen-Y craze will soon run out of steam. Most bogans may not notice or care, but I predict that there will be a great number of people, bogan or otherwise, who will come to “rethink their ink” in the very near future.

Alll I can say is that Dermatologists who sub-specialise in laser tattoo removal are going to make serious bank…

My chick Tahnya kept saying no to a tramp stamp, but I kept at her to get one done. After some heavy handed persuasion from me and a big night out when I made sure she was liquored right up and got totally shit faced, she said yes. I got the stamp design put on her that i wanted too, to show she’s mine forever and she gives the best head. It’s an upside down stamp above her ass crack in indonesian that translates as ‘i love my belt buckle forehead’ – it’s upside down so i can read it when Tan’s on her knees giving me a blow job (which i like, so its often).

Tan says she’s noticed a difference in the taste and speed of my cum as well – she reckons that i come faster when i’m in her mouth once i spot the tatt and i shoot a bigger load into her sweet hole before she swallows. I’ve even come so much a few times that she’s gagged on it and spat it, which i really hate her for. so now if she ever she spits it out, i go apeshit with her and she knows what she has to do next to please me. i turn her over and make her lick it up, then as soon as her tongue touches the cum on the floor, i ram my cock right up her ass and ream that red hole till its sore. Even bled her a few times while doin it. so this just shows ya that a tramp stamp is much more than some selfish thing a woman gets for her. i even had me closest mate check it out on the quiet once while Tan was sucking and moaning and her eyes were shut – Del’s thinkin of making his mole get one like Tan’s, but not in the same ethnic language.

However from what you say you are just sick.
You do not need a good woman to fuck you you just need fucking by some male gorilla or baboon. Something you be related to.
